Women’s Tennis Turns Away Western New England, 6-3

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott women's tennis team defeated Western New England University, 6-3, on Wednesday evening at the South Campus Courts.

Endicott opened up the match with a sweep of doubles as the pairings of Fernanda Trevino (Dallas, Texas) / Justine Hoover (Wallingford, Conn.), Ana Mar Molina (Sachse, Texas) / Kaitlin Fitzgibbons (Nashua, N.H.), and Yolanda Mendonca (Albany, N.Y.) / Brittany Dupuis (Hopedale, Mass.) breezed to victories at No. 1 (8-2), No. 2 (8-2), and No. 3 (8-3), respectively.

Meanwhile, in singles play, Western New England claimed wins at No. 6 (forfeit) and No. 3 (6-3, 7-5) to tighten the match at 3-2, but the Gulls responded with triumphs at No. 1 and No. 4 – sandwiched around a loss at No. 5 – to clinch the season-opening win.

Hoover pushed the Gulls' lead to 4-2 at No. 1 (6-3, 6-0), while Mendonca finished things off with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 4.

Fitzgibbons also registered a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles to round out the list of highlights for the Gulls.

"We did a nice job managing our emotions for the opening match," said Endicott women's tennis head coach Anthony D'Angelo. "Western New England has a tricky lineup to play, but we did a nice job focusing on what we can control."

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Endicott has not lost at home since March 8, 2020 (7-0).
  • Mendonca earned her first collegiate wins in singles and doubles for the Gulls today.

Endicott (1-0) hosts conference foe Roger Williams this Saturday at 12 PM. Western New England (0-1) visits Nichols on Saturday at 11 AM.
