Women’s Tennis Advances to Second Round for the Second Consecutive Year

AMHERST, Mass. – The Endicott women's tennis team traveled to regional host, Amherst for the First Round of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament Thursday afternoon. The Gulls faced Farmingdale State in the opening round and defeated the Rams 5-2 to advance, where they will face Amherst tomorrow, at 9:00 a.m.

The Blue and Green improve to 15-3 while the Rams end their successful season at 15-3 in the first appearance in the national tournament.

To start off the match strong Endicott came out of the gates sweeping doubles play to take an early 3-0 lead. Tabbing the first victory of the day, in the #3 slot, freshman duo Jamie Zompa (Marlborough, Mass.) and Skyelar MacLeod (Portsmouth, R.I.) defeated freshman Tatiana Rosamilia (Oceanside, N.Y.) and sophomore Denise Liguori (Massapequa, N.Y.) 8-2.

Coming in right behind was (#1) junior Amy Heacox (Marion, Mass.) and partner, freshman Mackenzie Rhodes (Rye, N.H.) who took their counterparts Jessica Sickles (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) and Priscilla Signore (Staten Island, N.Y.) in an 8-6 decision. Wrapping up doubles play with a stellar performance were (#2) sophomores Suzie Newman (Dighton, Mass.) and Brittany Potter (Bedford, N.H.) who defeated Michelle Fredericks (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Alex Bentz (Masapequa Park, N.Y.) in a tight 9-8 (7-2) victory.

The Blue and Green headed into singles play needing just two more victories to clinch a spot in the Second Round of the national tournament. (#3) Rhodes got the Gulls one step closer as the rookie took her opponent Fredericks in a 6-0, 6-1 decision.

The Rams would not back down so quickly as they took two straight matches from Endicott as (#1) Heacox was defeated by Sickles (6-3, 6-0) and sophomore Savannah Deady (Andover, Mass.) fell to her counterpart Rosamilio (6-0, 6-2) to make it a 4-2 score.

In the #6 spot Zompa put her foot down and edged her opponent Liguori 6-2, 6-4 to secure the victory and help send this group of Gulls to their second consecutive Second Round appearance.

In the #2 and #4 spots the Blue and Green were battling with Farmingdale State before the fifth victory was secured. (#2) Newman did not finish her match but dropped the first set 3-6 and came out strong in the second set with a 6-1 victory. (#4) Potter also had a split score with her opponent as she took the first set 6-4 and was down 3-5 in the second set before Zompa secured the victory.
