CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Endicott College women’s lacrosse team fell to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, 21-18, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday night in Claremont, Calif. The Gulls finish up their season at 16-5 overall while the Athenas (16-2) advance to the next round of play and take on the College of New Jersey in Salisbury, Md. on Saturday May 15th.
The first half saw plenty of offense as the two teams combined for 24 goals in the opening frame. CMS jumped out to an early 4-1 lead on a free-position tally from Sarah Dick (Beverly, Mass.) before the Gulls came roaring back to tie the game at 5-5 on a \#Kristen Micho\# (Syracuse, N.Y.) tally with 13:50 remaining. EC took its first lead of the game at 7-6 when \#Valerie Feldman\# (Albany, N.Y.) found the back of the net, but the Athenas scored the four goals to jump out ahead, 10-7.
\#Molly Sowles\#’ (Cumberland, Maine) back-to-back scores made it a 10-9 ballgame but CMS scored three consecutive times to push its lead back to 13-9. Feldman and \#Holly Davis\# (Guilford, Conn.) each scored in the final minute, cutting the Athenas’ lead to 13-11 headed into the break.
Micho got the scoring started in the second half before Claremont-Mudd-Scripps scored seven of the next eight goals to take a commanding 20-13 lead. Endicott was able to cut the lead to 20-16 on tallies from Davis, \#Morgan DeShaw\# (Danville, N.H.) and Micho, but the Athenas’ lead was too much as CMS held on for the 21-18 victory.
Wednesday's game marked one of the highest scoring games in Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship history. Endicott tied the record for most goals scored by a team in a loss. The teams combined for the second highest combined goal total in a half (24) and the third highest combined goal total for a game (39).
The Gulls were led by five goals from \#Holly Davis\# while \#Molly Sowles\#, \#Kristen Micho\#, and \#Valerie Feldman\# each scored four times for the visitors. Sowles added a team-high seven draw controls while \#Brittany Kane\# (Scarborough, Maine) led the team with three groundballs. \#Carin Czerniawski\# (Monroe, Conn.) caused a game-high four turnovers while \#Leah Neff\# (South Berwick, Maine) made 10 saves in the setback.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was led by five goals apiece from Sarah Dick and Madison Shove (Portola Valley, Calif.). Colbi Brawner (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) and Devon Scott (Portland, Ore.) also added three goals each while Molly Murtaugh (Wilton, Conn.) had a pair to lead the other four scorers. Scott added a team-high seven draw controls while Sarah Dick had three caused turnovers. Katie Campbell-Morrison (Cleveland, Ohio) made 12 saves en route to her 16th win of the season.
The Blue and Green finish their 2010 campaign at 16-5 overall after winning its fifth-straight TCCC Championship and appearing in its fifth-consecutive NCAA Tournament.
