Bowdoin pulls away from Gulls in second half

BEVERLY, Mass. – Bowdoin College’s Katie Stewart (Chevy Chase, Md.) and Katy Dissinger (Upper Brookville, N.Y.) combined for 10 goals and a pair of assists as the Polar Bears defeated Endicott College, 15-10, on Sunday afternoon in non-conference women’s lacrosse action in Beverly, Mass. The No. 16 ranked Polar Bears improve to 8-4 overall while the Gulls drop to 11-4 this season.

Bowdoin got the scoring started as McKenna Teague (Cohasset, Mass.) gave the Polar Bears a 1-0 lead with a bounce shot in the first 2:01 of game action. Carolyn Gorajek (Highstown, N.J.) extended the Bowdoin lead to 3-1 before Endicott knotted the game at three goals apiece on back-to-back goals from \#Kristen Micho\# (Syracuse, N.Y.) and \#Morgan DeShaw\# (Danville, N.H.). The Polar Bears promptly scored the next five goals, including a pair from Dissinger, to stretch its lead to five with just under eight minutes to play in the opening half.

The Gulls got three goals back before the half as DeShaw and Micho each tallied scores with \#Carin Czerniawski\# (Monroe, Conn.) adding the other goal to make it an 8-6 game at the break.

Katie Stewart scored the first two goals of the second half for a 10-6 lead before \#Valerie Feldman\# (Albany, N.Y.) stopped the bleeding with her first goal of the day. Stewart and Feldman traded goals and Endicott’s \#Lauren Todd\# (Newfield, N.H.) scored on a feed from \#Kellie Cunningham\# (Derry, N.H.) to make it a two goal game, 11-9.

Stewart scored her fifth goal of the game nearly four minutes later to make it a three goal lead. \#Michelle Loizzo\# (Longmeadow, Mass.) tallied the last goal for EC with 12:54 remaining but the Polar Bears scored the final three goals of the game, as Dissinger slammed the door shut with back-to-back goals a mere 1:11 apart to send Bowdoin home with a 15-10 non-conference win.

The Gulls were led by three goals from \#Kristen Micho\# while \#Morgan DeShaw\# and \#Valerie Feldman\# each scored two goals apiece. Feldman also grabbed a team-high four draw controls while \#Carin Czerniawski\# had a goal and an assist to go along with five groundballs and three draw controls. \#Leah Neff\# (South Berwick, Maine) suffered the setback, allowing 15 goals while making eight saves.

Bowdoin was led by the 12 combined points from Stewart and Dissinger. Liz Clegg (Husdon, Ohio) also added a pair of scores while Katie Herter (Topsfield, Mass.) had a goal with a game-high eight groundballs and five draw controls. Tara Connolly (Simsbury, Conn.) picked up the win in net, making seven saves on 21 shots faced.

The Blue and Green return to action on Wednesday as the Gulls wrap up their five-game homestand with a TCCC matchup against Salve Regina at 4:00 p.m. Bowdoin returns to NESCAC play next Saturday when the Polar Bears travel to Williamstown, Mass. for a faceoff with Williams College at 12:00 p.m.
