Thornberg and Leary Grab First CCC Field Hockey Awards

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Endicott's field hockey team has taken two of the first field hockey weekly awards given out by the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC). Hannah Thornberg (Oakland, Maine) was named the CCC Offensive Player of the Week, while Meghan Leary (Hampton Falls, N.H.) earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.

The awards were announced Tuesday afternoon by CCC Commissioner Gregg M. Kaye and the conference office.

Thornberg, a senior captain, scored two goals in each of the Gull's wins this past weekend, and now has four goals on the year, to go along with two assists for a team-high ten points. She is also now tied for second all-time on the Endicott career goal's list with 37, matching the output of Joanne Reid.

Thornberg's first goal on Sunday, the eventual game-winner, came just three minutes into the game on a great effort when she knocked the ball out of the air and into the net on a rebound chance.

Leary, a sophomore defender, has helped Endicott outscore their opponents 14-4. She has been calm and poised in defense and has been a big part of the reason that Endicott's opponents are having so much trouble setting up possession in the offensive circle.

Leary was a member of the All-CCC First Team and the NFHCA All-Region Second Team a season ago and is looking poised to repeat last year's stellar play in the backfield.

Endicott field hockey is off to a 2-1 start to the season, with two convincing wins over Colby-Sawyer and Maine-Farmington and a one-goal defeat at Babson.

Endicott will be back on the field tomorrow evening at 7:00 pm when they host UMass Dartmouth. Endicott will travel to local rival Gordon on Saturday at 1:00 pm for their first CCC contest of the year.
