No. 5/9 Baseball Sweeps Wentworth On Senior Day; Van Emon Breaks Single-Game Strikeout Record

BEVERLY, Mass. – The No. 5/9 nationally ranked Endicott baseball team swept Wentworth, 12-2 (7 inn.) and 3-0, in conference action on Saturday afternoon at North Field.

Prior to game one, Liam Crovo (Melrose, Mass.), graduate assistant coach Ryan Gallagher (Methuen, Mass.), Connor McDonald (Quincy, Mass.), Joseph Millar (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.), Jake Nardone (Wakefield, Mass.), Ian Parent (Williston, Vt.), Caleb Shpur (East Canaan, Conn.), Max Tarlin (Sharon, Mass.), Patrick Tevenan (South Weymouth, Mass.), Noah Therrien (Litchfield, N.H.), Gabe Van Emon (Lexington, Mass.), Thomas Barbieri (Cranston, R.I.), and Rian Schwede (Whitman, Mass.) were all honored for their contributions to the program and the Endicott College in a Senior Day ceremony.

GAME ONE: No. 5/9 Endicott 12, Wentworth 2 (7 inn.)

WP (5-1): Schwede – 5 2/3 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 9 K
LP (2-5): Jon Campbell (Snohomish, Wash.) – 4 IP, 12 H, 11 R, 11 ER, 3 BB, 4 K

The Gulls posted five runs in the first inning and never looked back in the mercy rule victory (10 or more runs after 7 complete).

TJ Liponis (Scarborough, Maine) led the offense with three RBI (sac fly, two-run double).

Nicolas Notarangelo (Taunton, Mass.) and Kyle Grabowski (Westfield, Mass.) also drove in two runs apiece, while Millar, Nardone, and Danny MacDougall (Taunton, Mass.) plate one each.

Therrien (1/3 inning) and McDonald (1 IP) closed out the contest for Schwede who collected his 11th career victory on the bump for the Gulls.


GAME TWO: No. 5/9 Endicott 3, Wentworth 0

WP (7-0): Van Emon – 9 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 14 K
LP (0-4): Brodi Farinas (Lewiston, Maine) – 7 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 3 K

Van Emon took a perfect game into the sixth inning en route to fanning a single-game program record 14 batters (nine looking).

The hard-throwing lefty struck out four straight batters to start the contest and five out of the first six hitters he faced.

Offensively, Liponis (groundout), Grabowski (single), and MacDougall (double) all notched RBI in third, fourth, and seventh innings, respectively.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The strikeout record stood for more than 20 years (13, Turner, at Anna Maria, 4/14/03).
  • Van Emon logged the longest outing of his career.
  • He only allowed three runners to reach scoring position in the contest (none further than second).
  • Endicott is 49-9 all-time against Wentworth.
  • The Gulls have won 22 in a row in the all-time series.
  • Endicott is 14-0 at home this season.

WHAT'S NEXT

No. 5/9 Endicott (30-5, 13-1 CCC) hosts No. 12/13 Eastern Connecticut State on Monday, May 1 at 4 PM. The Warriors are the defending NCAA Division III national champion.

Wentworth (4-26, 2-13 CCC) hosts Western New England on Tuesday, May 2 at 7 PM.
