Volleyball falls in five sets to undefeated Tufts, beat Smith 3-1 at MIT Invitational
MEDFORD, Mass. - On day one of the MIT Invitational, the Endicott women's volleyball team split with Tufts and Smith, falling 3-2 to the undefeated Jumbos before winning 3-1 over the Pioneers.  Endicott moved to 5-8 (1-0 CCC) after the day's action.

The Gulls went up two sets to one on Tufts before the Jumbos mounted a comeback by forcing a fifth set and winning 3-2 (19-25, 25-23, 24-26, 25-14, 15-11).  Endicott dominated the first set by leading the entire way.  Set two saw the Gulls once again jump out to an early lead by taking a seven point advantage at 15-8 before Tufts came back to tie the set scores.  The third set had nine ties and four lead changes, but a strong run at the end lifted the Gulls to a 2-1 advantage.  Tufts trailed early in set four, but regained the lead and held on to force the deciding set in which they carried their momentum. 

First year player Alexandra Gearin (Los Angeles, Calif.) led the Gulls with 21 kills and nine digs.  Setter Sarah Allshouse (Berthoud, Colo.) dished out 47 assists while Ashley Norley (Sudbury, Mass.) was strong defensively with 32 digs.

Endicott only dropped the second set of a four-set win over Smith, 3-1 (25-20, 12-25, 25-22, 25-10).  

Elyse Barbour's (Greenville, R.I.) 12 kills and two blocks were critical in Endicott's winning effort.  Gearin added nine kills.  Gearin and Norley did their part defenisvely with 15 and 13 digs, respectively.  Allshouse tallied 27 assists in the win.  

Endicott will face Williams tomorrow at noon in the Silver bracket of the MIT Invitational with another match 4:00 pm against an opponent to be determined.
