BEVERLY, Mass. - Today's The Commonwealth Coast Conference softball double-header between Endicott College (29-4, 19-1 TCCC) and Curry College (25-11, 16-4 TCCC) was postponed in the second inning due to rain and unplayable field conditions. Today's first game will resume tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. in the bottom of the second inning with the score tied 2-2 with game two of the double-header to follow after that.
In the first two innings of action, the Gulls got on the board first as current TCCC Player of the Week Jenna Lazar (Milton, Mass.) led off the bottom of the first with a walk. Lazar would steal second and then come around on a Merry MacDonald (Braintree, Mass.) double that rolled under the center fielder's glove, allowing her to move to third. That would be as far as she would get however as the Colonels forced back-to-back groundouts by Meghan Sargent (Salisbury, Mass.) and Hayley Hovhanessian (Farmington, Conn.).
The Colonels would respond with two runs of their own in the top of the second, giving Curry the 2-1 lead. Amanda Peters (East Bridgewater, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to start the inning and then sacrificed over to second by Sara Girard (Turners Falls, Mass.). Jessica Coyle (Weymouth, Mass.) would step to the plate and hammer a Jenna Bortolotti (Milton, Mass.) offering over the left field fence to give the Colonels an early 2-1 edge.
In the Endicott half of the second, Sarah Spaziano (Norton, Mass.) would lead off the inning, crushing a towering homerun off the rock facade in left-center field. While rounding the bases, the umpires began to investigate the field and as soon as Spaziano touched home plate, called the game due to the rain and the unplayable field conditions.
Game one will resume tomorrow with nobody on and nobody out in the bottom of the second inning with Ashley Wright (Merrimack, N.H.) batting at 3:00 p.m.
