Field Hockey Edges UNE, 2-1

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott field hockey team defeated the University of New England (UNE), 2-1, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Saturday afternoon at North Field.

UNE raced out to a 1-0 advantage in the first quarter with a tally at the 12:20 mark.

Endicott responded in the second when Tori Swanson (Farmington, Conn.) intercepted a UNE defender's pass and took it the distance with just under six remaining before halftime (24:16).

Out of the break, the Gulls outshot the visitors 11-1 in the third quarter, and cashed in the game-winner as Kathleen Reissfelder (Westwood, Mass.) received a Maddy Dengler (Winchester, Mass.) pass in the middle of the scoring area and buried it for her 11th marker of the season.

In goal, Alexis DeMattia (Methuen, Mass.) picked up the win (13-4) with one save.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • With the victory, the Gulls moved to 20-19 all-time against UNE, snapping a two-game losing streak.
  • Reissfelder netted her second game-winning goal of the season (fourth career).
  • Endicott's defense held UNE to just three penalty corners and 10 shots total in the contest.
  • The Blue and Green have recorded 10 or more penalty corners in four of their last five matches.

WHAT'S NEXT

Endicott (14-4, 4-1 CCC) earned a share of the regular season title with both UNE and Roger Williams. Due to a myriad of tiebreakers, the Gulls will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming CCC tournament and will host No. 3 seed UNE on Thursday, November 2nd at 7 PM on North Field.
