Endicott field hockey traveled to Henniker, NH yesterday where they fell to the Pilgrims of New England College, 3-2. The Gulls loss breaks their eight game winning streak, drops their overall record to 11-5, and drops their CCC record to 4-2. The win improves the Pilgrim's overall record to 10-3 and CCC record to 5-2.
It was 7:27 into the first half when NEC's Jess Hanson beat two EC defenders to open up a breakaway against EC's goalkeeper Erin Curry, giving NEC the early lead. EC tied the game when senior forward KD Balentine was able to finish the play on a pass from sophomore midfielder Caitlin Murray. The Gulls had 11 shots in the first half to the Pilgrims 5 shots; however the game was tied at the half.
The Gulls went into the second half hoping to capitalize on their scoring opportunities to finish the game with a CCC victory, but instead the Pilgrims scored two more goals against EC. At the 29:20 mark, NEC's Megan Simula gave the Pilgrims the edge over the Gulls, scoring NEC's second goal of the game. Five minutes later, it was NEC's Hanson who scored again increasing NEC's lead to 3-1.
The Gulls would not go down without a fight. The Gulls out shot NEC 8-5 in the second half, but only capitalized on one opportunity. With just 3:30 left in the game, EC was awarded a penalty stroke. It was senior forward Kim Doody who found the back of the net against NEC's goalkeeper Jaqui Parker, making it a 3-2 game. However, the Gulls were unable to come back from behind to catch the Pilgrims.
EC goalkeeper Erin Curry collected 13 saves.
The Gulls will face the Seahawks of Salve Regina on Saturday October 23rd at 11am at EC's Tupper Field.
