BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott women's volleyball team defeated the University of New England (UNE), 3-2, by scores of 25-19, 16-25, 25-15, 18-25, and 15-10 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Thursday night at MacDonald Gymnasium.
Hadley Helenbrook (Atlanta, Ga.) paced a balanced attack via a team-high 12 kills (.310) to go along with five service aces, nine digs, and three block assists.
Julia Giroux (Bedford, N.H.) also added nine putaways and 11 digs, while Stephanie Moreau (Methuen, Mass.), Kelsey Sanborn (Londonderry, N.H.), and Megan Murphy (Danvers, Mass.) chipped in with five-plus kills (7, 6, 6), respectively.
Freshman setter Haley Weiner (Southington, Conn.) orchestrated the majority of the offense via a career-high-tying 20 assists.
Despite the back-and-forth nature of the match, tonight's contest only featured five ties (0-2-1-1-1) and one lead change in the fifth set.
The Gulls rallied from a 5-1 deficit in the fifth behind a set-high four kills from Helenbrook, one assisted block, and two UNE errors before the visitors took a timeout trailing 8-6.
From there, Endicott capitalized on three UNE miscues, a service ace of its own, two kills from Murphy – including the match-clincher – and a putaway from Giroux (13-9 lead).
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Endicott improved to 30-3 all-time against UNE.
- Moreau notched two block assists in the fifth set, with one coming at 5-6 and the other at 8-6 which forced UNE to take its first timeout; she has now recorded five or more block assists in three matches this season.
- Emma Ruel (Duxbury, Mass.) finished with a team-high 13 digs (six correlated directly to kills).
- The Gulls produced match-highs for hitting percentage (.667, 8-0-12) and sideout percentage (69%, 7-10) in set five.
WHAT'S NEXT
Endicott (10-12, 5-1 CCC) hosts Suffolk on Saturday, October 28 at 12 PM. UNE (12-7, 1-4 CCC) travels to Roger Williams on Saturday for a 1 PM matchup.
