BEVERLY, Mass. – Endicott College is a pioneer in requiring comprehensive internship experiences in every program of study for undergraduate students. Fernanda Trevino (Dallas, Texas), who is a finance and international business double major as well as a member of the women's tennis program, is currently interning at American Airlines (AA). Here's a look into her internship experience.
1) Why American Airlines?
American Airlines has an amazing company culture built on respect for the customers, the employees, and the company as a whole. Additionally, the internship program at AA was very appealing and I accepted my internship offer for the experience and the networking opportunities I would obtain. With a program guided for the development of all interns, I was able to work closely with my colleagues, along with management, to work on a project during the summer.
2) What was the process like to obtain your internship?
After applying for the internship via indeed, I was scheduled for my first interview over the phone. During the first interview with a hiring manager, I went through personality and character questions along with a series of hypothetical, analytical, and quantitative questions. My next interview was via Microsoft Teams with a Senior Finance Manager where again I went through a different set of analytical and quantitative questions. Around a week later I received an offer letter.
3) Describe your overall internship experience.
As a Cargo Financial Analyst Intern, I will be working closely with the cargo team and the claims team to complete an assigned project which will be presented to senior management at the end of the internship. More specifically, I will be creating a model to analyze the claims incurred by the company. The analysis will then allow me to collaborate with various stations in hopes of proposing solutions and limit the costs for the company. Additionally, the internship program at AA provided interns with the opportunity to learn more about the company as a whole rather than just focusing on the finance department. For example, we had the opportunity to go on several tours of different departments like the Integrated Operations Center, a hangar tour, a flight simulation tour, and more.
4) What have you learned from your internship?
Through my internship, I have been able to learn about and use different software systems used in the company along with improving my skills in Excel. Working in cargo, I was able to learn a lot about the department and operations. Aside from my department, I was able to learn more about the company and the airline industry as a whole.
5) How will this internship help you in your career moving forward?
This internship will allow me to learn more about the airline industry and my field of study. The opportunity to work in a big company is a huge benefit as there are many opportunities to network and develop your professional career. I network every day when I come into my internship because I am building professional relationships with different departments and cargo members from stations around the world. This internship has strengthened my interest in my field, and I am excited about the future.
