BEVERLY, Mass. - Behind a six goal effort that saw four different players tally goals, the Endicott women's soccer team took down North Shore foe Salem State 6-0 on Sunday evening. The win is the first for the Gulls on the young season as they rebounded well from a tough defeat on Saturday.
Larissa Cade (Middlefield, Conn.) got the Gulls off to an extremely quick start, scoring just over one minute into play. The sophomore made a nice run down the left wing and cut into the box and beat a defender to then pot her shot in the lower right hand corner past the Salem St. keeper.
Junior Sharlotte Pernice (West Springfield, Conn.) would notch her first of the season in the 16th minute. Senior defender Marissa Carlson (Bristol, Conn.) lofted a perfect cross into the box that Pernice headed towards the net. Her shot grazed off the keeper's hands to give the Gulls a 2-0 lead. Not done yet, Pernice then struck again in the 25th minute as she scored her second header of the match, this time on a cross from freshman Hailey Demers (Charlton, Mass.) to give the Gulls a 3-0 lead that would hold until half.
Senior Rachel Hanna (Chelmsford, Mass.) helped the Gulls pick up where they had left off in the first by corralling a rebound off of a save of another Pernice shot, to earn her second of the season.
Mary Verneris (Hamden, Conn.) would then record her second and third goals of the young season just over two minutes apart to finish the scoring. Her first came off of a penalty kick that stemmed from a yellow card being assessed for a hard tackle inside the box at the 65:06 mark of the match. Verneris was able to bury her shot into the lower right corner past the keeper to give Endicott a 5-0 lead. Just over two minutes later, she struck again, burying a feed from Demers to finish the scoring off a 6-0.
