Fast Start Leads Women’s Lacrosse Past Springfield In Season Opener, 15-11

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — The Endicott women's lacrosse team scored five straight goals to open up its contest against Springfield on Wednesday evening en route to a 15-11 season-opening victory over the Pride at Stagg Field.

The Gulls went on to outscore Springfield 9-3 in the first half and nearly matched the Pride goal for goal in the second stanza (8-6 SPR) to come away with the win.

Morgan Pike (Shapleigh, Maine) bookended the 5-0 run to start the game for Endicott, while Katy Garvin (Mansfield, Mass.), Gabriella Prisco (West Haven, Conn.), and Katie Schenk (Southbury, Conn.) all found the back of the cage as well during the spurt.

Overall, Pike led the Gulls by tying her career-high for goals with four. Schenk also added a hat-trick in her collegiate debut, while Garvin and Prisco finished with two goals apiece to highlight the rest of the offense.

In goal, Alexandra Rose (East Lyme, Conn.) stopped seven shots to pick up the win (1-0 this season, 2-1 career).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Endicott's goals mostly came in long stretches as the Gulls produced two separate 4-0 runs during the matchup (1st half, 13-58-3:48, 9-2 lead | 2nd half, 18:12-15:07, 13-6 lead) in addition to their 5-0 run to start the game.
  • Kiana Napolitano (Revere, Mass.), Lauren Faber (Littleton, Mass.), Garvin, and Schenk all scored in their collegiate debut.
  • The Gulls are 3-2 in their last five season openers.
  • Endicott is 4-1 all-time against Springfield.
  • The Gulls have also won the last two meetings versus the Pride.
  • Endicott controlled the transition game going 20-for-25 on clears. Last season, the Gulls were 3-0 when they converted 20 or more clears successfully.
  • Highlighting that 3-0 record was Endicott's 11-10 overtime win against Roger Williams in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship on May 3, 2019.

Endicott (1-0) travels to No. 18 nationally ranked Trinity (Conn.) on Wednesday, March 4 a 6 PM. Springfield (1-1) visits Western New England on Saturday, February 29 at 1 PM.
