The Endicott softball team secured an automatic bid to the 2011 NCAA Softball Tournament by virtue of its ninth straight The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Championship. The Gulls are currently 35-6 overall after a perfect 3-0 record during the TCCC Tournament.
Two-time TCCC Pitcher of the Year Jenna Bortolotti (Milton, Mass.) started all three tournament games for the Blue and Green and finished 3-0 with a 2.06 ERA. On the season, the senior has a 17-4 overall record with 17 complete games and seven shutouts. The program’s all-time winningest pitcher, Bortolotti brings NCAA Tournament experience having already made five starts in her career.
TCCC Rookie and Player of the Year Jennie Lacolla (Stoneham, Mass.) headlines one of the nation’s most powerful offenses. The Gulls are currently fourth in the nation in batting average (.381) and scoring average (8.85 runs per game) and are third in slugging percentage (.568). Lacolla leads Endicott in a number of offensive categories including runs (51), homeruns (8), and total bases (91).
Senior co-captain and First Team All-TCCC honoree Ashley Wright (Merrimack, N.H.) has pieced together a strong season at the plate and in centerfield. Wright is hitting .439 with a team-high 15 doubles and leads all outfielders with 77 putouts and 14 assists.
A balanced lineup features four players with at least 40 runs, 50 hits, and 10 doubles and six players with more than 25 RBIs. As a team, the Gulls have drawn 155 walks and boast a .460 on-base-percentage.
The Gulls earned the three seed in the Providence Regional hosted by Rhode Island College. Their first opponent will be the Monks of St. Joseph’s College (ME), who are 35-8 entering tournament play. The winner will advance to take on the winner of Coast Guard (36-2) and Lesley (29-6). The double-elimination tournament begins at 10:00 am on Thursday (May 12) and could be decided as early as Sunday afternoon.
