Gulls rally past Kean, fall to Centenary on day two
Kissimmee, Fla. – Day two of Endicott softball’s spring break trip provided another double header split, as the Gulls staged a seventh inning rally to squeeze past Kean University, 6-4, in the morning before being blanked by Centenary College 4-0. The Blue and Green sit at 2-2 overall through the first four games of the season.

Trailing 1-0 in the top half of the fifth inning, Alexandra Moise (North Reading, Mass.) hit a sac fly to right field that scored pinch runner Katelyn Soja (Chicopee, Mass.) and leveled the game at one. Kean responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the fifth to take a slim 2-1 lead. The Cougars’ Nicole Scarillo hit her second solo home run of the day one inning later to extend the advantage.

The Gulls erupted for five runs in the top of the seventh to erase a two run deficit and pick up the win. Freshman Mattie Brett (Waterford, Conn.) led off the inning with a single to left field. Sophomore Jocelyn Russo (Middletown, Conn.) continued her strong play with an RBI single down the left field line to score Brett. 

Kean’s Courtney Smith walked the bases full before issuing two more free passes to give Endicott a 4-3 lead. Moments later, the Gulls added two more thanks to an error. 

Reigning The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) pitcher of the year Jenna Bortolotti (Milton, Mass.) threw one inning in relief to pick up the save.

Sophomore Kayla Carignan (Laconia, N.H.) went six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out a pair en route to her first win of the season. 

Russo was effective at the plate once again, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run in the win.

The Cyclones’ Meagan Madsen allowed just one hit – a fifth inning single by senior Ashley Wright (Merrimack, N.H.) – as Centenary shut out Endicott 4-0 to wrap up day two of play. 

Madsen’s counterpart, senior Jenna Bortolotti (Milton, Mass.), went the distance in the circle, allowing three runs and fanning a pair one game after picking up the save in a relief appearance. 

Centenary broke a scoreless game open with two runs in the top of the fourth inning before tacking on two more in the seventh. 

The Gulls continue their stretch of double headers with games tomorrow against Dubuque (11:00 am) and Utica (1:00 pm).
