Endicott takes two from Regis in TCCC schedule opener

Endicott takes two from Regis in TCCC schedule opener
Weston, Mass. – The Endicott softball team finally started their TCCC schedule against Regis on Saturday, earning two shutout wins in the process including a no-hit performance by senior pitcher Jenna Bortolotti (Milton, Mass.) in game one.

Game One – Endicott 11, Regis 0 (5 inn.)

Bortolotti faced the minimum number of batters in Endicott’s 11-0 win over Regis in game one, striking out five hitters in five innings pitched. The senior earned her third victory of the season, improving to 3-3.

Providing the offense for the Blue and Green were senior Ashley Wright (Merrimack, N.H.) and sophomore Jocelyn Russo (Middletown, Conn.) who each drove in three base runners. Russo did much of her damage with the long ball starting with a two-out, two-RBI homerun in the third inning that gave the Gulls a 7-0 lead. Those two runs were part of a six run third inning.

Later, when leading off the top of the fifth inning, Russo cracked a solo shot to make the score 11-0 in favor of the visitors.

Wright finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI. The centerfielder led off the top of the second with a triple, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Nicole Devlin (Dudley, Mass.). Dudley finished the game 1-for-4, but drove in two runs.

Out of the designated player spot, freshman Jennie Lacolla (Stoneham, Mass.) was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two singles and two doubles. The freshman also drove in her team leading 16th RBI of the season.

Game Two – Endicott 12, Regis 0 (5 inn.)

Lacolla picked up where she left off in game two with a 3-for-4 day at the plate with five RBI and three runs scored. A two-run double in the first, a two-run homerun in the second, and a RBI double in the fifth accounted for all of her runs batted in.

On the mound for the Gulls, sophomore hurler Kayla Carignan (Laconia, N.H.) went the distance allowing four hits while striking out one batter en route to winning her third game of the season. She is a perfect 3-0 in 2011.

Sophomore Byrne Katz (Trumbull, Conn.) and freshman Mattie Brett (Waterford, Conn.)  each knocked in two runners while Colleen Martin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) recorded an RBI and a run scored.

Senior Hayley Hovhanessian (Farmington, Conn.) was active on the base paths, crossing the plate three times on the day.

Endicott’s doubleheader tomorrow against WNEC has been postponed due to poor field conditions. A makeup date has not yet been determined. The Gulls’ next game will be on Tuesday, March 29th at 3:00 pm against Anna Maria College in Beverly.
