Paola Earns Second Straight Rookie of the Week Award, Gold Named Player of the Week

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Endicott took two of the three major awards in this week's Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) baseball player of the week announcement, which came Monday afternoon from the CCC office and Commissioner Gregg M. Kaye.

Matthew Paola (Middlebury, Conn.) was named Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week, while Tad Gold (Martha's Vineyard, Mass.) earned Player of the Week honors, his first award of the 2013 season.

From his center field position, Gold led the Gulls to a 4-0 weekly record, including a doubleheader sweep of third-place Salve Regina that locked up a share of first place in the CCC regular-season standings. In four games, Gold collected three multiple-hit games, while batting .533 (8-for-15), with two doubles, five RBI, six runs scored and two stolen bases.  Gold notched four hits and four RBI in the all-important doubleheader sweep in Newport, in which the Gulls set a record for most runs in a game, with 23 in the second contest.

A freshman infielder, Paola enjoyed a monstrous day at the plate in the Gulls' weekend sweep.  In each game of the doubleheader, Paola collected three hits, belted a home run, knocked in three runs and scored three runs.  He added two hits in Endicott's non-conference victory over UMass-Boston on Sunday afternoon.  In four games played, Paola batted .444 (8-for-18) with four doubles, two home runs, six RBI and seven runs scored. The first-year player is currently leading the team in batting average, at .392, and slugging percentage, at .570.

The Gulls (27-11) are winners of eight straight games, and have earned the #2 seed in the CCC tournament. They will wrap up the regular season at 4:00 pm this afternoon when they host Bates, then welcome in Wentworth on Thursday for the first conference tournament game.
