Southern Maine 5, Endicott 1: Gulls Stymied By Huskies

Southern Maine 5, Endicott 1: Gulls Stymied By Huskies
BEVERLY, Mass. – Endicott was held to three hits and no runs through the first eight innings of play on Tuesday afternoon and fell 5-1 to Southern Maine in non-conference baseball action on North Field, halting a three-game win streak and dropping the Gull's overall record to 10-6.

The Huskies (11-3), who are ranked third in New England and are receiving votes in the national D3Baseball.com poll, were led by a 3-4 day from shortstop Sam Dexter (Oakland, Maine), which included solo home runs to left field in both the sixth and seventh innings.

The game was a pitcher's duel of matching zeros on the scoreboard through the first five innings, but the visitors scored three runs in the sixth and single runs in the seventh and eighth.

Endicott, who ended the game with just five hits to eleven by the visitors, was able to grab an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single by catcher EJ Martinez (Brooklyn, N.Y.), but the Gulls left the bases loaded after filling them with two outs on two errors and two hits, the other by right fielder Conor Ressel (Rockport, Mass.).

Left fielder Tucker White (Deerfield, N.H.) also helped lead the Southern Maine attack, going 3-4 with two runs scored, one of them on a home-run of his own to lead off the top of the eighth for Southern Maine.

Tucker collected his second long ball of the season after also scoring in the sixth, when the visitors used back to back singles by John Carey (South Portland, Maine) and Chris Bernard (Scarborough, Maine).

Endicott junior righty Tyler Hill (Las Vegas, Nev.) was dominant through the first five innings, scattering five hits and no runs until Dexter led off the bottom of the sixth with his first homer of the day and of the year.  White then singled to center field and stole second, one of his two thefts in the game, before Carey and Bernard each singled through the left side, sandwiched around a wild pitch that allowed Carey to move to second.

Starter Logan Carman (Newfields, N.H.) and reliever Shyler Scates (Jefferson, Maine) each pitched four innings of scoreless ball for the Huskies, allowing a combined just three hits. Carman struck out four and walked just one, while Scates did not walk or fan a batter in collecting the win to move to 1-0 on the year.

Hill drops to 0-2 with the loss, as his final line was five and two-thirds innings pitched with eight hits, three earned runs, two strikeouts and no walks.

Senior first baseman Brett Holmgren (Middleboro, Mass.) was 2-4 in the game for Endicott, and he and Tad Gold (Martha's Vineyard, Mass.) each had doubles in the loss.

The Gulls will be on the road Wednesday afternoon for a 3:00 pm game at Brandeis University.

Southern Maine will travel to in-state rival Bowdoin College Wednesday for a  4:00 pm start.
