BEVERLY, MA - Freshman forward Nicole Young (Rockland, MA/Cardinal Spellman) shot 7-of-10 from the field and did not miss a shot from the foul line in collecting a game-high 22 points for the No. 2 seeded Endicott College, which upended No. 3 Curry College, 79-62, in the first round of the Commonwealth Coast Conference Playoffs Tuesday night.
Young also pulled down a game-best 15 rebounds (7 offensive) for the Gulls (17-9) while senior guard Liz Yuneman (Middle Village, NY/St. Francis Prep) dropped in 21 points and senior guard Jodi Brown (Coventry, RI/Coventry) added 19 points and four steals.
The Colonels (8-18) got 19 points from Bonnie Hirtle (Quincy, MA/Quincy) and 14 from Colleen Dunne (East Granby, CT/East Granby). The visitors got the jump on Endicott in the first half, opening up a 10-point cushion at intermission (37-27). The Colonels shot over 60 percent from beyond the arc and got clutch shooting from Hirtle, who, along with Dunne, had nine points at the break.
Curry shot 46 percent from the field, including 55 percent from beyond the arc, in the first half, but Endicott turned the tables in the final 20 minutes. The Gulls erased the deficit on a 13-3 run opening the second half. The Colonels shot just 19 percent in the second half while Endicott ripped the twine at 52 percent.
Endicott owned a 47-34 edge on the glass and turned the ball over just 11 times, compared to 15 turnovers for the visitors. Junior forward Sara Voigt (Kingston, NH/Kearsarge Regional) and sophomore guard Aubrey Drugan (Salem, NH/Bishop Guertin) scored seven and five respectively for Endicott.
Heather King (West Newbury, MA/Pentucket Regional) put in 10 points for Curry, who also got eight points from Christina Sancinito (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield).
Endicott will travel South Division top seed Nichols College Thursday night at 7:00 PM.
