Anthony D’Angelo Steps Down As Endicott Tennis Head Coach

Anthony D’Angelo Steps Down As Endicott Tennis Head Coach

BEVERLY, Mass. — Anthony D'Angelo has stepped down from his position as head coach of the Endicott men's and women's tennis teams for a new coaching opportunity. Later this month, D'Angelo will become the third head coach in the 34-year history of the University of Tampa women's tennis program (NCAA Division II) following his last match with the Gulls on Thursday, September 26 (women's tennis senior day).

Women's tennis assistant coach Ibadat Javed will then take over as interim head coach for both Gulls' tennis programs.

D'Angelo will bring a championship pedigree and a proven track record in recruiting to Tampa, highlighted by his ability to attract out-of-region students to Endicott College from California, Florida, Nebraska, New York, New Jersey, Texas and internationally (Germany, India, Ireland).

"We wish Coach D'Angelo well with his move to the University of Tampa and want to thank him for his time here at Endicott, and his commitment to both the men's and women's tennis programs," said Endicott College Assistant Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Brian A. Wylie. "Though the departure comes at a critical time during the season, we are pleased to announce that Coach Javed has accepted the interim head coach position, and has our total confidence and support to lead the tennis programs for the immediate future. As a former student-athlete and captain at St. Lawrence University, and serving as Endicott's assistant coach last year, which culminated with a conference championship, we are excited for Coach Javed and this opportunity."

D'Angelo took over the women's program in the spring of 2019 (April 5th to September 13, 2024) and has amassed a 63-39 overall record (.618) / 30-3 conference mark (.909) since then.

During that stretch, the Gulls have punched their ticket to the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship five times, won four straight conference titles from 2020-24, and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in three out of those four seasons.

D'Angelo also guided the women's program to its first-ever Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) regional ranking on March 29, 2023, and received Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) ITA Team of the Month accolades in April 2021.

The 2023 CCC Coach of the Year mentored 43 All-Conference selections, including one CCC Co-Player of the Year, and 38 Academic All-Conference honorees.

Additionally, his squads garnered five ITA All-Academic Team citations and 45 student-athletes claimed ITA Scholar-Athlete awards.

On the men's side (February 2018 to May 2024), D'Angelo has pushed the Gulls to new heights as Endicott competed in the CCC Championship for the first time in program history last season.

D'Angelo accomplished the feat by increasing his strength of schedule year after year, which provides the appropriate context to his 41-53 overall record (.436), 23-12 league mark (.657), and three playoff appearances (CCC Semifinals: 2021-22, 2022-23).

Twenty-eight of his student-athletes garnered CCC All-Conference honors, underscored by one Rookie of the Year selection.

Academically, the Gulls notched 23 CCC Academic All-Conference selections, 16 ITA Scholar-Athlete Awards, and two ITA All-Academic Team honors.

"The Endicott tennis program and the greater community will always have a special place in my heart," said D'Angelo. "The athletic department has been incredibly supportive, and I'm confident both teams will continue achieving success."

A search for a new men's and women's tennis head coach will begin immediately.

NOTE: All references to the CCC are for historical purposes. The league rebranded to the Conference of New England (CNE) this season.
