Gulls Collect Conference Victory at Salve Regina

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - The Endicott College field hockey team scored a pair of second half goals on their way to a 3-2 victory over Salve Regina University during a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contest at Gaudet Field on Saturday. The win improves the Gulls to 2-7 overall and 1-1 during CCC-play, while the Seahawks drop to 3-6 on the season and 0-4 in the conference.

The Gulls received one goal apiece from juniors Taylor Matties (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Melissa Enright (York Beach, Maine), and Hannah Thornberg (Oakland, Maine), while sophomore Stacie Teevens (Westborough, Mass.) dished-out the only assist of the game.

It didn't take long for the Gulls to jump on the scorebaord, as Matties scored in just the sixth minute of play to put Endicott ahead 1-0.

It turned out to be the only goal of the opening half, due mostly to the strong play of Salve Regina goalie Murphy McCann (Westerly, R.I.). The Gulls outshot the Seahawks by a 21-2 margin in the opening frame, but McCann made 14 saves during the period to keep her team within one score heading into the break.

Early in the second half, the Seahawks tied the game behind junior Kelly Burke's (Georgetown, Mass.) unnassisted tally in the 45th minute. Burke now ranks second on the team with nine points on the season.

However, Enright answered for the Gulls less than six minutes later with what turned out to be the game-winning goal, putting Endicott in front 2-1.

The Gulls then sealed the victory when Teevens fed Thornberg for the final goal of the game in the 61st minute. Thornberg is the first on the team to double digits, notching her tenth marker of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Taylor Teixeira (Exter, N.H.) made four stops for the Gulls to earn the win. The freshman McCann was extremely busy in net, and did her best to keep Salve Regina in the contest by making a season-high 18 saves.

The Gulls will take to the field again on Thursday when they host Nichols at 4 p.m., while the Seahawks look to bounce back when they host Regis in a non-conference match up at Gaudet Field on Saturday (7 p.m.).
