Babson Too Much for Field Hockey in Season Opener

Babson Too Much for Field Hockey in Season Opener

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Junior Hannah Thornberg (Oakland, Maine) scored two goals for Endicott and goalie Taylor Teixeira (Exeter, N.H.) made nine stops, but it wasn't enough for the Gulls to overcome Babson, who were 6-2 winners in the season's first field hockey contest for both teams. First-year Emily Sawchuk (Cumberland, Maine) added an assist for Endicott, who played well but fell into a 6-1 hole by the end of the first half.

First-year Hannah Feneberg (Plaistow, N.H.) recorded a hat trick in her first half of collegiate play to lead Babson in what was also the first official game played on Babson's newly-resurfaced MacDowell Field.

Babson scored all six of its goals in the opening session. Feneberg was spectacular in her collegiate debut for the Beavers, scoring three goals in the first 35 minutes of play. Senior captain Courtney Weaving (New Preston, R.I.) added one goal and three assists, sophomore Morgan Lockwood (Feeding Hills, Mass.), and junior Kelly Walsh (Gardner, Mass.) also netted goals, and senior Kristen Steigerwald (North Andover, Mass.) tacked on an assist. Senior goalkeeper Jess Pashos (Winchester, Mass.) went the distance in net for Babson, finishing with seven saves.

Lockwood wasted little time in giving her team its first lead of 2011 as she scored off a Weaving pass just 37 seconds into the contest. Weaving then assisted Feneberg at 5:29 and junior Kelly Walsh (Gardner, Mass.) at 13:23 as the hosts jumped out to a commanding 3-0 advantage.

Thornberg put Endicott on the board when she gathered a deflection in front and tucked it past Pashos at 15:42. However, Feneberg rattled off two straight unassisted scores – both off rebounds – at 20:18 and 23:23 – and Steigerwald assisted Weaving on her first goal of the year at 33:52 to give Babson a 6-1 lead heading into the break.

Thornberg tallied the lone goal of the second half, as she took a short feed from Sawchuk near the left post and scored her second of the night to make it 6-2. However, that would be all Pashos would allow as the Beavers coasted to the four-goal victory.

Endicott will begin their home season on Saturday when they host Plymouth State at 1:00 PM. The Beavers will be home again Saturday to play Skidmore.
