Wirtz Named Chair of Athletic Trainers of Massachusetts (ATOM) Continuing Education Committee

BEVERLY, Mass. – Abbey Wirtz, head athletic trainer in the Endicott Athletics & Recreation Department and an adjunct professor in the School of Sport Science, was recently selected as chair of the Athletic Trainers of Massachusetts (ATOM) Continuing Education Committee.

In her new role, Wirtz will be tasked with the development, planning, and implementation of future continuing education events for ATOM's members. Wirtz will also maintain the organization's approved provider status and handle compliance duties through the Board of Certification.

Wirtz is the second Endicott athletic training staff member to serve a high-profile role within ATOM joining Jenn Concannon within the organization. Concannon is currently the treasurer of ATOM's Executive Committee.

Abbey Wirtz, MS, LAT, ATC, PES, GTS begins her 12th year at Endicott and third year as Head Athletic Trainer of the department in 2021-22. Prior to her promotion to Head Athletic Trainer, Wirtz served the department as its Associate Head Athletic Trainer for five years.

Wirtz received a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training in 2008 from Boston University. She also received a Master of Science in Clinical Exercise Physiology in 2010 from Northeastern University, where she completed a graduate assistantship within the athletic training department. During her studies at Northeastern, Wirtz gained a wealth of knowledge and clinical experience centered on cardiac stress testing and cardiac rehabilitation. 

Wirtz also serves as an adjunct professor within the Athletic Training and Exercise Science undergraduate programs at Endicott and is also a preceptor for the athletic training students. 

Wirtz is certified as a CPR Instructor through the American Heart Association, has her PES certification, is a Graston Technique Specialist, and has an additional certification in dry needling. She was recently named the Chair of the ATOM Continuing Education Committee and is responsible for developing continuing education events for ATOM members and maintaining ATOM's approved provider status through the Board of Certification. She is a member of the National Athletic Trainer's Association and is a licensed athletic trainer by the Massachusetts Board of Allied Health.
