Women's Tennis Tops Goucher In Spring Season Opener, 7-2

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Endicott women's tennis team defeated Goucher College, 7-2, in non-conference action on Monday evening.

The Gulls flew out of doubles play with an early 2-1 lead and never looked back.

Olivia Martinelli (Coral Springs, Fla.) and Shelby Henry (Lincoln, Nb.) started off the match with an 8-2 win at No. 2 (8-2), while Ripley Uyeda (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Lejla Guster (Wethersfield, Conn.) produced an 8-4 victory at No. 1.

In singles play, Olivia Berler (Marstons Mills, Mass.) claimed a decisive 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 5 to get Endicott going.

From there, Uyeda made quick work of her opponent at No. 1 (6-0, 6-1), while Henry clinched the match at No. 4 with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph.

"This was a great first outdoor match for us to play", said Endicott women's tennis head coach Anthony D'Angelo. "Goucher is scrappy and puts a lot of tricky shots back into the court. We need to continue building our offense for a quick turnaround tomorrow."

  • Endicott earned an automatic bid in the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament after capturing the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) title on 10/23/21
  • Martinelli made her first appearance as a Gull (DII transfer from New Haven).  
  • The Gulls improved to 5-2 away from The Nest.

Endicott (10-4) visits Drew on Tuesday, March 15 at 10 AM. Goucher (2-4) travels to Texas Lutheran on Tuesday, March 22 at 4 PM.
