Gulls' 2OT Regional Bout Ends In 0-0 Stalemate At WPI

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Endicott men's soccer team battled host Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) to a double-overtime tie, 0-0, Tuesday night at Alumni Stadium in non-conference regional action between two ranked opponents.

WPI began the night ranked No. 8 in the latest NSCAA DIII Men's Soccer New England Regional Poll, while Endicott was slotted ninth.

Junior forward Diego Maillo (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) registered two of the Gulls' five shots on the night, while junior forward Dario Neukom (Palma de Mallorca, Spain) and sophomore Mark Mozzicato (Stoneham, Mass.)  each put one shot on goal in the 21st and 44th minutes, respectively, but to no avail as the Gulls were held scoreless for the first time this season.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Tonight's match was the first-ever meeting between Endicott and WPI.
  • Endicott had scored first in six of seven matches so far in 2016, until being shut out tonight for the first time this season.
  • The Gulls earned their second tie of the season against a non-conference opponent.
  • Senior goalkeeper Nick Weinstein (Trumbull, Conn.) made two stops in goal to move to 5-2-2 on the season.
  • Weinstein recently became the program's career leader in wins (21) in the team's 1-0 victory over Roger Williams on Homecoming, surpassing Daniels Higgins '13 record of 20.

FOR THE FOES

  • Junior goalkeeper Connor Hoeckele (Granby, Conn.) made two saves as he moved to 4-1-2 on the year.
  • The Engineers out-shot the Gulls, 8-5, including a 6-2 advantage in the second half.
  • Junior midfielder Brendan Nemes (Kingston, Mass.) and senior forward Matt Farrell (Groveland, Mass.) each had a shot on target for the hosts.

WHAT'S NEXT

Endicott (5-2-2, 2-0-0 CCC) travels to Dudley, Mass. on Saturday, October 1 at 11:00 a.m. to continue with the CCC slate at Nichols.

WPI (6-1-2, 1-1-0 NEWMAC) will take on Emerson in Boston, Mass. on Saturday, October 1 at 1:00 p.m.
