Gulls Drop Season Opener To Visiting Carthage, 4-1

 

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott men's soccer team fell, 4-1, to the visiting Carthage College Red Men Friday night at Hempstead Stadium in the season opener.

Endicott's freshman forward Evan Couchot (Mason, Ohio) celebrated his first career goal (unassisted) as his strike went high into the back of the net to open the scoring of the match in the 24th minute to give the Gulls a 1-0 edge.

The Red Men knotted the score at one-all in the 33rd minute as sophomore midfielder Kevin Mahoney (Orland Park, Ill.) notched the first of his two goals tonight with a high arcing shot over the head of Gulls' senior goalkeeper Nick Weinstein (Trumbull, Conn.).

Tied 1-1 at the break, Carthage took the lead on K. Mahoney's game-winning goal in the 77th minute and never looked back as the Red Men fired off two more insurance goals in the waning minutes to secure the victory.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Endicott and Carthage met for the first time in program history tonight.
  • Endicott is now 1-4-1 in season openers (1-2-1 at home) during head coach Joe Calabrese's six-year tenure.
  • Weinstein made eight saves as he slipped to 0-1-0 on the season.
  • Carthage outshot Endicott, 17-11, including 10-3 in the second half.

FOR THE FOES

  • Sophomore goalkeeper Niko Mavrogiannis (Mokena, Ill.) picked up his second win of the season (2-0-0) as he stopped three shots.
  • K. Mahoney tallied two goals and one assist to pace Carthage's offensive attack.
  • Senior forward Austin Bitta (Libertyville, Ill.) and junior back Jamie Tausend (Deerpark, Ill.) each recorded one goal and one assist.
  • Junior forward Johnny Rimkus (Kenosha, Wisc.) and sophomore back Giles Phillips (Lake Barrington, Ill.) had one helper apiece.

WHAT'S NEXT

Endicott (0-1-0, 0-0-0 CCC) hosts Husson University in Day Two of the North Shore Invitational on Saturday, September 3 at 5:00 p.m. at Hempstead Stadium.

Carthage (2-0-0, 0-0-0 CCIW) travels to Gordon on Saturday, September 3 at 7:00 p.m. in Day Two of the North Shore Invitational.
