Field Hockey Lifts to First Conference Victory of the Season

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Endicott field hockey team traveled to Roger Williams for the first Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contest of the 2014 season. Junior Morgan Bresnahan (South Burlington, Vt.) tallied two goals in the match to help lift the Gulls to a 3-0 shutout victory. Endicott improves to 4-1 (1-0 CCC) while the Hawks fall to 3-3 (0-1 CCC).

Endicott will see action next on Tuesday, September 16th as they host non-conference opponent, Westfield State at 7:00 p.m. The pair met for the first time last season where the Gulls soared to a 1-0 victory. Roger Williams will compete next on Wednesday, September 17th when they travel to CCC opponent, Nichols for a 7:00 p.m. battle.

The first half was controlled by the Gulls as they outshot their opponents, 22-0 and holding the Hawks to zero penalty corners to Endicott's 10.

The Blue and Green got on the board 10 minutes into the first half after senior Emily Sawchuck (Cumberland, Maine) fed Bresnahan the ball in front of the goal in a scramble to send the ball into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.  The goal was the second for Bresnahan on the season and first assist for Sawchuck.

After battling the Hawks defense for the next 11 minutes of play, rookie Brittany Bushey (Pittsford, Vt.) nailed her third goal of the season after senior Elizabeth LeClair (Wilton, Maine) made a crisp pass to goal for Bushey to make the quick shot to the post.

With Endicott continuing to pepper the Roger Williams defense and sophomore goalkeeper Melora Lavoie (Portland, Maine) the Blue and Green wrapped up the first half with a 2-0 lead.

The second half was just as busy for the Gulls as they worked offensive pressure forcing 13 penalty corners to the Hawks five. Endicott ripped nine shots in the half forcing Lavoie to make four big saves. Finally with 18 minutes left in regulation Bresnahan hit her second goal of the game and third of the season after receiving a pass from junior center midfielder, Ashleigh Allen (Glastonbury, Conn.) who tallied her third assist on the season.

Overall the Gulls worked hard in the circle taking 31 shots, with 18 being on goal while Roger Williams was held to just four with one shot on goal.

Endicott kept Lavoie busy as they forced the sophomore goalkeeper to clear 15 shots while holding the hungry Gulls to just three goals. Between the pipes for the Gulls, junior Rose Bradley (Pottstown, Pa.) controlled the defensive unit that held the Hawks to very little shots while making one save.
