Gulls Leave NEC Behind To Take Sole Possession of First Place

Oct. 21, 2003

Beverly, MA - A complete team effort by EC secured the number one spot in the Commonwealth Coast Conference today at home on Tupper field.

The Gulls came out shooting to take a quick 1-0 lead when junior forward Kim Doody (Laconia, NH) got her first of the day unassisted at 31:05. The Gulls pulled ahead to make it 2-0 at 24:04 on a pass from KD Balentine (Jr/York, ME) to Jen McCormack (Jr/Milton, MA) who netted it for the goal.

With first place on the line, NEC was not ready to give it up. They answered back with two goals of their own to tie it going into the half. Stephaine Vaine and Megan Simula had goals for the Pilgrims.

Both EC senior captain Kelly McNamara (Reading, MA) and NEC's Cass Hudson had 3 saves in goal for the first half.

In second half play, NEC took the lead at 24:40 with an unassisted goal from Brittney Vogrin. Vogrin's goal lifted the Pilgrim's to 3-2 over the Gulls. It was to be their last goal of the game.

Lisa Cote (Jr/Manchester, NH) and the EC defense chased down midfield balls and kept the NEC offense out of the circle to hold them to 3 goals. Erin Curry (Fr/East Hampstead, NH) stepped into goal for the Gulls' second half, recording 3 saves and only allowing one.

Gulls offense got the scoring going minutes after Vogrin's goal to tie it at 3-all. McCormack got her second goal of the day on a hit in from Lyndsay Woods (Fr/York, ME) who picked up her first collegiate point with the assist. And they never looked back. Kim Doody scored the game-winner with 10:02 remaining to put the Gulls ahead for good, 4-3. McCormack assisted Doody's second goal to finish the day with 5 points. Doody got her 5th point of the game when she assisted on EC's 5th goal of the game, scored by forward KD Balentine. Balentine had 3 points for the day to round out the scoring for the 1st place Gulls.

Today's win breaks the conference tie for 1st place, and improves the Gulls record to 11-6 overall, 6-1 in the CCC. The Gulls play St. Joseph's College (ME) this Saturday, October 25 at home at 11:00 am. Please join us to celebrate our Senior Day!
