Mules breeze past Endicott, 14-5

BEVERLY, Mass. - The Endicott College women's lacrosse team suffered their first defeat of the season as Colby College defeated the Gulls 14-5 on Sunday afternoon at Endicott Stadium in Beverly, Mass. The Gulls fall to 2-1 while the Mules improve to the same record (2-1). Endicott's Rebecca Bushnell (Guilford, Conn.) recorded a hat-trick by scoring three of the Gulls' five goals in the game.

The Mules were able to get on the board first as Amy Campbell (North Andover, Mass.) swept into the zone and dodged a defender to put a low shot past Endicott's Molly Hamel (North Yarmouth, Maine). The Gulls responded just over a minute later as Michelle Loizzo (Longmeadow, Mass.) was able to convert on a free-position attempt to knot the score at 1-1. Bushnell would score seven minutes later off a pass from Molly Moss (Yarmouth, Maine) to give the Gulls their first lead of the game.

Colby would respond quickly as they scored three goals in a :47 second span that would give the Mules a 4-2 lead. Heather Nickerson (Falmouth, Mass.) scored the first goal of the three-goal run while Kathleen Kramer (Norwell, Mass.) took the ensuing draw control the length of the field to score the go-ahead goal, 3-2. Nickerson scored nearly a half-minute later off a pass from behind the net from Lauren Strazzula (Norwell, Mass.) to help build the Mules' lead to two.

The Mules were not done yet as Claire Donegan (Great Falls, Va.) converted on a free-position shot to give Colby the three goal edge. Strazzula would score on another free-position attempt with 6:02 remaining that would be the final tally of the period, stretching Colby's lead to 6-2.

It would be all Colby in the second half as the Mules received eight more goals from their attack. Kate Sheridan (Hingham, Mass.) would score three goals in the period for the Mules. Bushnell would tack on two more goals and Loizzo would score her second for Endicott as the Gulls ran out of time and lost their first game of the season, 14-5.

Colby outshot Endicott by a 46-20 margin while also winning groundballs (30-20) and draw controls (16-5). The Mules also forced 20 Endicott turnovers while being successful on 9-of-10 clear attempts compared to the Gulls 10-of-15.

Endicott received three goals from Rebecca Bushnell while Michelle Loizzo chipped in with the other two. Molly Moss had the lone assist for the Gulls while Molly Hamel stopped 24 shots in the losing effort.

Kate Sheridan had three goals to lead the 10 different Colby players to score a goal. Kathleen Kramer and Heather Nickerson each had a pair of goals while Claire Donegan, Amy Campbell, Lauren Strazzula, Anne Geraghty (Westford, Mass.), Casey Thomas (Needham, Mass.), Katie Briody (Hopewell, N.J.), and Lane McVey (Bronxville, N.Y.) all scored a goal apiece.

The Blue and Green return to action on Wednesday night when they travel to Bowdoin College for a non-conference matchup scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Colby College will continue its six game road trip when it travels to the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday for a 4:00 p.m. face-off.
