Softball Takes Two At UNE

Softball Takes Two At UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine — The Endicott softball team mercy-ruled UNE twice, 12-0 and 12-4, in five innings on Friday evening at Nor'easter Diamond.

GAME ONE: Endicott 12, UNE 0 (5 inn.)

WP (2-2): Jaylin Couto (Taunton, Mass.) — 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K
LP (2-3): Cat Higgins (Medway, Mass.) — 2 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 1 K

Chloe Shapleigh (Lynnfield, Mass.) tallied a career-high-tying six RBI to lead the Gulls.

The senior first baseman notched an RBI groundout in the first (2-0), launched a grand slam to right field in the fourth (10-0), and capped the scoring in the fifth with a single.

Shapleigh's six RBI are the second-most in a single game in program history (tied, 10 instances).

Paige Berdos (Plainville, Mass.) also drove in three runs, and produced a multi-hit game along with Abby McClaflin (Easthampton, Mass.), Elyse Saccoccio (Coventry, R.I.), and Shapleigh.

In the circle, Couto only allowed one runner to reach scoring position (2nd base, 1st inning) and retired eight straight batters from the end of the first into the fourth.

GAME TWO: Endicott 12, UNE 4 (5 inn.)

WP (4-1): Kristen Beebe (Brentwood, N.H.) — 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K
LP (1-3): Kara MacDonald (Medford, Mass.) — 3 IP, 11 H, 11 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 1 K

Christina Nowicki (Chelsea, Mass.) broke open a one-run game in the third (5-4 EC lead) with a three-run double and the Gulls never looked back in the contest.

McClaflin continued her red-hot day (5-8, 3 R, 5 H) with an RBI double later in the frame, while a Berdos RBI knock, passed ball, and Hadley Marchand (Andover, Conn.) sac fly pushed across three more runs in the fourth.

Beebe earned her 12th career win in relief, retiring all nine batters she faced in order (3rd-5th).
