Softball Falls To MCLA, 7-3

WILLIAM PATERSON RECAP

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Endicott softball team fell to Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA), 7-3, on Sunday afternoon at Legends Way Field 1.

MCLA senior Rachel Quackenbush (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) earned the win (2-0) on seven innings pitched, eight hits, three runs (one earned), three walks, and six strikeouts.

Endicott freshman Laura Somerville (Suffield, Conn.) was dealt the loss on five innings pitched, seven hits, seven runs (all earned), five walks, and four punchouts. Sophomore Mikaela Mallozzi (Shelton, Conn.) closed out the sixth by inducing three ground outs, along with giving up a two-out double.

In the top of the first inning, the Trailblazers scored all seven of their runs with two outs in the frame to give Quackenbush plenty of cushion room to work with before the Gulls attempted a late comeback bid in the sixth.

Angelica Perfido (Whately, Mass.) worked a bases loaded walk to get the offense going in the first, while Sierra Bailey (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) and Katie Berghela (Watervliet, N.Y.) highlighted the inning as each student-athlete drove in a pair of runs with a double. Sam Boyle (Pittsfield, Mass.) and Francesca Belli (Watertown, Mass.) also notched RBI singles in the seven-run frame.

After the Gulls scored on a throwing error in the second, Jamie Corda (Higganum, Conn.) cut into the deficit at 7-2 in the sixth when she roped a run-producing double down the left field line to plate Chrissy Gikas (Danvers, Mass.) from second with two outs. The Gulls proceeded to get another run on a throwing error later in the inning to make it 7-3, but Quackenbush ended a first-and-third threat with a fly out to right field to lock up the victory.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • With today's win, MCLA tied up the all-time series (2-2), which dates back to March 20, 2008.
  • Corda collected the first multi-hit game for the Gulls this season as the senior left fielder went 2-for-3 with one run scored, an RBI, a walk, and one stolen base.
  • Danielle Stratton (Agawam, Mass.) and Julia McNeill (Smithtown, N.Y.) also had stolen bases in the loss.
