Softball Drops Season Opener To William Paterson, 3-0

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Endicott softball team dropped its 2016 season opener to William Paterson University, 3-0, on Sunday morning at Legends Way Field 4.

Pioneers' junior starter Allison Podmajersky (Red Bank, N.J.) threw a complete-game two-hitter, striking out eight and walking two, to earn the win (1-0). Podmajersky did not allow a batter to reach second base and nearly retired the last 11 batters in order minus her two-out walk to Jamie Corda (Higganum, Conn.) in the bottom of the sixth.

Endicott senior Courtney Blake (East Islip, N.Y.) took the loss (0-1) on seven innings pitched, seven hits, three runs (two earned), one walk, and four strikeouts.

William Paterson grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Kaitlyn Poretti (Florence, N.J.) sliced an RBI triple down the right field line to plate Rachel Wasilak (Livingston, N.J.) from first base. Wasilak kept the inning alive by chopping a single over the leap of Gulls' third baseman Samantha DiBella (Danvers, Mass.) down the left field line before scoring on Poretti's extra-base hit.

In the fifth, the Pioneers added a pair of insurance runs as pinch-runner Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) scored on a wild pitch, while Wasilk drove home Eleni Lutas (Pompton Plains, N.J.) with an RBI single up the middle.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • William Paterson is now 3-1 in the all-time series, which dates back to March 14, 2004.
  • Julia McNeill (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Emily Hoffman (Malden, Mass.) both collected singles in the loss.

FOR THE FOES

  • Wasilak went 3-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI.
  • Along with Poretti and Wasilak, Lutas, Kelsey Wimmershoff (Park Ridge, N.J.), and Tracy Geller (Commack, N.Y.) all notched hits in the win, with Geller recording the only other extra-base hit (double in the top of the seventh) among Lutas and Wimmershoff.
