Boxscore

Beverly, Mass. – Visiting Amherst bounced back from a two-goal deficit after the first period of play to hand Endicott an 11-10 loss in non-conference men’s lacrosse action Tuesday night at Endicott Stadium. The Gulls took a 4-2 lead through the first period of play before the Lord Jeffs outscored the hosts 5-3 in the second. A 3-2 third period proved to be the difference as Amherst walked away with a slim one-goal victory.

Chris Cotter (Lordship, Conn.) led Endicott (2-2) with five points on four goals and an assist while senior midfield Kyle Jordan (Falmouth, Maine) added a pair of goals.

Devin Acton (Sudbury, Mass.) paced Amherst with two goals and an assist in the win. Aaron Mathias (Ridgefield, Conn.), Evan Redwood (Lutherville, Md.), and Danny Gold (Medfield, Mass.) each scored twice for the Lord Jeffs, who improved to 1-1 with the win.

Endicott opened the game with three unanswered goals from Cotter, Jordan, and Jon Thanas (Cumberland, R.I.). With four and a half minutes to go in the first period, Alex Fox (Garden City, N.J.) found Acton for his first of the game to cut trim the deficit to two. Cotter added another with less than four to play in the quarter before Ramsey Bates’ (McLean, Va.) tally with just under three minutes left.

Amherst carried the momentum into the second stanza as it scored five unanswered to open the period. Endicott managed to get three back before halftime, including a pair of man-up goals by Brian Estes (Derry, N.H.) and Harry Holden (Duxbury, Mass.) to level the game at seven entering the break.

Danny Gold (Medfield, Mass.) put the visitors on the board less than two minutes after halftime but Cotter responded with a pair of goals to put the Gulls back on top 9-8 with seven-plus minutes to go in the third period.  Mathias and Redwood connected for two unanswered to flip the score and give the Lord Jeffs a one-goal lead entering the final 15 minutes of play.

Jordan found the back of the net for his second goal of the day with 3:42 to go in regulation. A late unnecessary roughness penalty on the Gulls forced them to play man-down in the final two-plus minutes and the Lord Jeffs capitalized. Acton’s game winner came with 19 seconds remaining on the penalty and proved to be the difference.

Amherst’s Sam Jakimo (Woodbury, N.Y.) made 16 saves in the win while his counterpart, sophomore Mike Klein (Darien, Conn.), made a dozen in the loss.

The Gulls held a large advantage in shots (51-39) and ground balls (37-29) but were plagued by 18 turnovers including seven in the final period.

Endicott returns to conference play next Wednesday (March 23) with a 7:00 pm game at Salve Regina. Amherst will play its first home game of the season on Thursday (March 17) versus Roger Williams.
