Endicott Completes Series Sweep In 2-1 Win Over WNEU Behind Two Goals From Freshman Forward Sophia Cogliano

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott field hockey team overcame an early deficit to down Western New England University, 2-1, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Wednesday night at Golden Bear Stadium .

With the win, Endicott improved to (9-9, 7-4 CCC), while WNEU fell to 7-10 overall and 4-7 in conference play.

Sophomore forward Michelle Carlson (Hackettstown, N.J.) got the Golden Bears on the scoreboard first on a right-side cross from sophomore forward Brittany DeLima (Branchville, N.J.) just 9:22 into the game. WNEU then held on to the lead into the break.

Endicott outshot Western New England, 16-2, and eventually got into a rhythm in the second stanza as freshman forward Sophia Cogliano (Saugus, Mass.) connected twice in the 40th and 52nd minute with senior forward Morgan Bresnahan (South Burlington, Vt.) assisting both times to provide all the scoring for the Gulls.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Today's game saw Endicott complete its second sweep of a CCC opponent this season (Gordon, Western New England).
  • Cogliano paced the Gulls with six shots on goal as she recorded her 12th and 13th goals of the season, marking the fourth time she has scored twice in a single game this year.
  • Cogliano is fourth in the CCC in goals (13), which leads all rookies this season.
  • Bresnahan registered two assists in a single game for the first time in her career, bringing her season assist total to four.
  • Senior goalkeeper Rose Bradley (Pottstown, Pa.) did not make any saves, as she only faced one shot on goal, but earned her eighth win of the season.
  • Endicott is now 3-7 in games decided by one goal this season.
  • This was the third time this season that the all the Gulls' scoring in a win was supplied by one student-athlete (second time for Cogliano). 

FOR THE FOES

  • Carlson scored her fifth goal of the season. (Three of her five goals have come against Endicott.)
  • DeLima picked up her fifth assist of the season. (Two of her five assists have come against Endicott.)
  • The 12 saves for sophomore goalkeeper Grace Trupe (Cardiff, Calif.) was her second most this season (14 in a 3-0 loss to Springfield College on September 17).

NOTES

  • Endicott moves to 14-5 all-time against the Golden Bears dating back to the 2003 season as the Gulls have won the last 10 meetings, with a 7-3 record at on the road.
  • This was the second 2-1 victory over WNEU in program history, with the previous outing a 2-1 decision on Oct. 27, 2007 in Springfield, Mass. in the postseason.
  • Senior midfielder Ashleigh Allen (Glastonbury, Conn.) recorded her first career hat trick on September 30 earlier this season in a 7-2 win over the Golden Bears.
  • Carlson scored twice for the Golden Bears in the last meeting, and was assisted once by DeLima in that game on Sept. 30, 2015 in Beverly, Mass.

WHAT'S NEXT

Endicott (9-9, 7-4 CCC) returns home for a Senior Day showdown with Nichols College on Saturday, October 31 at 1:00 p.m. in the final game of the regular season. 

Western New England University (7-10, 4-7 CCC) will host Roger Williams on Friday, October 30 at 6:00 p.m. in the Golden Bears' last game of the regular season.
