Field Hockey Advances To CCC Championship In 4-1 Triumph Over Salve Regina; Will Face UNE In 2014 Finals Rematch

MIDDLETOWN, R.I – The Endicott field hockey team advanced to the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship with a convincing 4-1 win over No. 2 seed Salve Regina University Wednesday night at Gaudet Field in the conference semifinals.

With the win, Endicott improved to 11-9 overall and earned a rematch with the University of New England, as the two teams will square off in the CCC Championship on Saturday, November 7 at 1:00 p.m. in Biddeford, Maine, while Salve Regina fell to 16-4 on the season and awaits a potential ECAC bid to end its best season in program history.

Three first half goals by sophomore forward Olivia Larson (Cheshire, Conn.) in the 25th minute, sophomore defender Emylee Wood (Kensington, N.H.) (29th minute) and senior midfielder Ashleigh Allen (Glastonbury, Conn.) (34th minute) put the Gulls in the driver's seat as they cruised to a 3-0 advantage at the half.

The Gulls tacked on one more tally by Allen in the 58th minute, and junior midfielder Erin Gendreau (Sandwich, Mass.) notched the only score for the high-powered Seahawks' offense in the 68th minute.

In the other semifinal game earlier today, host No. 1 University of New England topped No. 4 Roger Williams University, 2-0, to return to defend its 2014 title.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Today's game saw Endicott score exactly four goals against the Seahawks for the third time this season.
  • Junior goalkeeper Cheka Ventura (Lawrence, Mass.) made her third start of the season and stopped seven shots to earn her second win of the year (2-0).
  • Senior defender Kristen O'Brien (New Boston, N.H.) tied the career record held by Emily O'Halloran '13 with her 14th career defensive save earned tonight (fourth of the season.) - Video of O'Brien's defensive save
  • All-CCC First Team sophomore defender Emylee Wood also recorded her fourth defensive save of the season as she brought her season goals total to seven.
  • Larson scored her sixth goal of the season.
  • Wood has scored four goals (at least one in each) in three games this season against Salve Regina.
  • All-CCC First Team/CCC Co-Defensive Player of the Year Allen tallied two goals in a single game for the second time this season (seven goals on the season) as she led the team with four of the Gulls' 18 shots.
  • Allen converted her seventh career penalty stroke (second this season), moving her to second on the all-time program list.
  • Larson, Wood, and Allen all scored in back-to-back games tonight.

FOR THE FOES

  • All-CCC Second Team sophomore goalkeeper Jessie Severino (Branford, Conn.) (16-4) made a career-high 13 saves in the defeat to earn her 100th save of the season.
  • Gendreau picked up her first defensive save of the season, and scored her 10th goal.
  • All-CCC First Team/CCC Offensive Player of the Year senior forward Abigial Tepper (Foxboro, Mass.) paced the team with four of the squad's 17 shots.

NOTES

  • The Gulls and Seahawks split their meetings during the regular season, as Endicott won a 4-2 road decision on September 16, while Salve Regina pulled off a 5-4 win at North Field on October 10. 
  • Endicott is 19-3 all-time against Salve Regina dating back to the 2003 season.
  • Endicott and Salve Regina have squared off four times in postseason play, as the Gulls have won 1-0 (11/03/04), 2-0 (10/29/05) and 1-0 on penalty stroke following a scoreless double overtime on Nov. 1, 2006, and includes a 4-1 win tonight. Endicott sports a 2-0 away record versus the Seahawks with its previous road postseason matchup the 1-0 win on Nov. 3, 2004 in Newport, R.I.
  • The Gulls have made the CCC Tournament in every season since joining the conference in 1999, with appearances in the conference championship in now 11 of 17 seasons.
  • Special note: The Endicott field hockey archive only dates back to 2003, so all-time results vs. an opponent may be slighly off.

No. 3 seed Endicott (11-9) will travel to Biddford, Maine for a rematch of the 2014 CCC Field Hockey Championship (4-3 double-overtime) and face the No. 1 seed Nor'easters on Saturday, November 7 at 1:00 p.m.

Salve Regina University (16-4) will await a potential ECAC bid to end its stellar season.
