BEVERLY, Mass. - Two second half goals sparked a Wellesley College comeback against Endicott College in non-conference field hockey action on Tuesday by a score of 3-2. Wellesley junior Callie Lekas (Brewster, Mass.) scored the go ahead goal late in the second half to push Wellesley over the top. The loss moves the Gulls to 11-3 (4-0 TCCC) while the win improves the Blue Pride to 6-3 (2-0 NEWMAC).
Endicott was able to jump out to an early lead five minutes into the game as sophomore forward Lindsey Mills (Arlington, Mass.) took a pass off the stick of Samantha Bourgeois (Gardner, Mass.) and placed it in the back of the net for an early 1-0 lead. Wellesley would respond four minutes later as Whitney Reid (Bensalem, Pa.) was able to corral a missed shot and dish to Kathryn Frett (Hallowell, Maine) who scored to tie the game at one-all. The rest of the half would be a battle for field position as each team had opportunities but neither could score.
The second half started with a bang as Mills was able to strike again for the Gulls to make it a 2-1 game. Senior Michelle Berard (Ashland, Mass.) made a pass from outside the circle that Mills was able to handle and flip over the goalie's head and into the goal. However, Wellesley would respond again quickly as Whitney Reid scored an unassisted goal to bring the game back to a 2-2 tie. Eight minutes later, the Blue Pride's Callie Lekas would break the deadlock as she put the ball in off a battle for possession in the front of the net to make the score 3-2. The Gulls would have opportunities but could never get the equalizer as time expired and the game ended.
Wellesley was led by its senior goalie Emily Hewitt (Alexandria, Va.) who played all 70 minutes and was able to make nine saves while facing 15 shots from Endicott. Her counterpart, senior net-minder Chelsea DeFeo (York, Maine), played well in the loss as she was also able to make nine saves in the contest.
Endicott looks to rebound from the tough loss when it continues its four-game home stand when it hosts the University of New England in TCCC action on Saturday. The ball will drop at 2:00 p.m. at North Field on the campus of Endicott. The Blue Tide look to make it three wins in a row when they host Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday in NEWMAC action at 12:00 p.m.
