NEWPORT, RI - Senior Jennifer Rheaume (Blackstone, MA/Blackstone-Millville) scored in the 62nd minute to give Endicott College a key win over Salve Regina University in The Commonwealth Coast Conference field hockey action Tuesday afternoon in Newport, RI.
Both teams had several scoring chances before Rheaume put away her sixth goal of the season for the Gulls. Endicott had 19 shots, while Salve Regina finished with 16. Endicott was more accurate, getting 10 shots on goal and forcing Seahawk goalie Devin Eppley (Darien, CT) to make nine saves. By contrast, Salve Regina put just four of its shots on net. Endicott's Chelsea DeFeo (York, ME/York turned each chance away to earn the shutout.
The Seahawks had a few chances in the second half getting four corners early on but could not capitalize. Rheaume and the Gulls were then able to take advantage of a defensive breakdown and leave Rhode Island with a hard fought win.
Freshman Lauryn Dahrooge (Charlton, MA) played well on defense for Salve Regina while sophomore Andrea Michel (Yarmouth, ME) also had a strong game but had a very tough task in marking Rheaume, whose speed created several scoring chances for the Gulls.
Salve Regina falls to 7-7 overall and 3-3 in the conference. The Seahawks play a non-league game at Simmons College on Thursday at 7:00 p.m., while Endicott, who improved to 9-3 overall and 3-3 in TCCC play, hosts TCCC foe New England College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
