SPRINGFIELD, MA - The Endicott College women's volleyball team made a solid statement on Tuesday night, defeating Western New England College, 3-1, in a TCCC showdown in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Western New England entered Tuesday's clash with an impressive 13-3 overall record. Endicott, the 2006 Conference Champions and TCCC pre-season favorite, began the match with a share of first place with a 4-0 TCCC record (13-7 overall).
The Gulls opened play with a hard-fought, 30-25, game one win. The close competition continued into game two, as Endicott was able to notch a, 30-27, victory to go up two games to none. WNEC showed their fight in the third game, downing the Gulls, 30-26. However, Endicott erased any comeback thoughts in the fourth game, as the Blue and Green defeated the Golden Bears, 30-24, to take the match three games to one.
Endicott was led by freshman Amy Grigg (Vernon, CT/Rockville), who notched 13 kills and two blocks in her first-ever contest against new TCCC foe, Western New England. Meghan Hall (Santa Cruz, CA/Aptos) and Brittany Nolan (Monroe, CT/Masuk) were also impressive in victory, notching 39 assists and 24 digs, respectfully. Sophomore outside hitter Steph Wiese (Higganum, CT/Haddam-Killingworth) had 11 kills and 16 digs for the Gulls.
Western New England was led TCCC Player of the Week Ashley O'Keefe (South Dennis, MA). The senior outside hitter had 14 kills, 14 digs and three blocks for the Golden Bears. Freshman setter Katharina Boes (Buffalo Grove, IL) tallied 36 assists, three aces and four blocks in the losing effort.
With the win, Endicott improves to 14-7 overall and 5-0 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Gulls return to action on Wednesday as they travel to cross-town rival Salem State College for a match with the Vikings.
