Endicott Bests Wheaton 6-1 in Non-Conference Play

Gretta Hartman strikes a forehand.

NORTON, Mass. – The Endicott women's tennis team posted a 6-1 victory over Wheaton (Mass.) on Thursday evening.

The Gulls were able to handle the Lyons in doubles play where they took two out of the three matches having the number two pairing of Margot Andreason (Portland, Maine) and Justine Hoover (Wallingford, Conn.) by a score of 6-2 and the number three pairing of Alexandra Barmore (Southington, Conn.) and Cara McCormack (Worcester, Mass.) with a score of 6-2 as well.

Today's contest was played in conjunction with NCAA Division I and II rules which only awards one point for winning the doubles portion of the match (best of 3, one point). This is in contrast to NCAA Division III rules which awards one point for each doubles flight won by a team.

Meanwhile, singles play featured five wins in the six matches led by Hoover at #2 singles where she posted a score of 6-2, 6-0. Next was Gretta Hartman (Glastonbury, Conn.) taking her match 6-0, 5-7(5), and 10-4. Continuing the momentum for Endicott was Reilly Fitzgibbons (Killingworth, Conn.) winning a close battle at #4 singles by a 7-5, 7-5 final.  Lauren Rahr (Waterford, Conn.) would push through a three-set match to claim the win at #4 singles, 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), and 10-7. Completing the day for the Gulls was Gillian Freter (Scituate, Mass.), who claimed a straight set 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6.
