Women’s Tennis Sweeps Johnson & Wales, 9-0

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott women's tennis team defeated Johnson & Wales University, 9-0, on Saturday afternoon at the South Campus Tennis Courts.

Gretta Hartman (Glastonbury, Conn.), Fernanda Trevino (Dallas, Texas), and Justine Hoover (Wallingford, Conn.) all notched two wins to highlight Endicott's efforts against the Wildcats.

Hartman and Trevino posted an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles and also won their singles matches at the No. 3 (6-3, 6-1) and No. 4 (6-2, 6-2) flights, respectively.

Meanwhile, Hoover grabbed a victory at the No. 2 position in straight sets (6-0, 6-0) and teamed up with Margot Andreasen (Portland, Maine) at No. 2 doubles for an 8-3 triumph.

Lastly, in doubles, Lauren Rahr (Waterford, Conn.) and Alexandra Barmore (Southington, Conn.) won 8-1 at No. 3. 

In singles, Hayley Barnett (Marlboro, N.J.), Reilly Fitzgibbons (Killingworth, Conn.) and Gillian Freter (Scituate, Mass.) all posted wins at the No. 1 (7-5, 6-4), No. 5 (6-3, 6-3), and No. 6 (6-0, 6-1) positions, respectively, to conclude the highlights on the day.

"I'm really happy with our effort today against a team that is fresh off an NCAA appearance," said Endicott women's tennis head coach Jeremy Howard. "Getting started off on the right foot with a doubles sweep really allowed us to open things up on the singles court."

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Today's match was the first meeting between Endicott and Johnson & Wales since the 1997-98 season. Endicott won that match, 5-3.
  • This is the first time the women's program has started a season at 2-0 since 2011-12.
  • The 2011-2012 season started a streak for the Gulls of winning five consecutive Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championships.

WHAT'S NEXT

Endicott (2-0) takes on Wentworth next Wednesday (Sept. 12) for its first conference matchup of the season at 3:30 PM. Wednesday's match will be played at Curry College in Milton, Mass. Johnson & Wales (2-1) travels to Bridgewater State University on Tuesday, September 11 at 3 PM.
