Gulls fall to Plymouth State in ECAC Quarterfinals

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The No. 3 seeded Endicott College women’s basketball team was upset by No. 6 seed Plymouth State University, 70-59, on Wednesday night as a part of the opening round of the ECAC Tournament held in Plymouth, N.H. The Panthers improve to 16-10 overall and will take on No. 2 seed Regis College on Saturday. The Gulls wrap up their 2009-2010 campaign at 19-8 overall.

The Panthers move on to the semifinals, and will play second-seeded Regis College this Saturday at top-seeded Keene State College. Regis advanced with a 63-53 decision over seventh-seeded Worcester State on Wednesday evening. The ECAC title game is set for Sunday at Keene State.

Plymouth State never trailed in the game and held a double-digit lead for the majority of the ballgame. It was a 13-3 Panther advantage before the game was five minutes old, and PSU got the lead up to 18 points, 33-15, with just under eight minutes to play in the first half. The Panthers maintained the 18-point margin at halftime, 37-19.

Endicott chipped away at the deficit in the second half, getting the margin under 10 points (44-35) with 12 and a half minutes on the clock. The Gulls were within five points, 49-44, with nine minutes to play, but PSU answered with a 7-1 run to get the margin back up to double figures, 56-45. Endicott closed to within eight points with less than two minutes remaining, but the clock ran out on the comeback attempt.

Junior \#Ashley Wright\# (Merrimack, N.H.) led the way for the Gulls, scoring 17 points after hitting five three-point shots. Senior \#Ceciley Chisholm\# (Lexington, Mass.) contributed 12 points for Endicott, making all three shots she took and converting 6-of-7 from the free throw line.

Plymouth State’s front line of Alicia Doucet (Manchester, N.H.), Amanda Kania (Manchester, N.H.) and Laura Kent (Bellingham, Mass.) combined for 56 of the Panthers’ 70 points in the ball game. The trio also combined for 26 rebounds led by Doucet’s double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds. Kania contributed 19 points and nine boards and Kent chipped in with 15 points and seven rebounds. Senior guard Kalie Judd (Peabody, Mass.) also added eight points and eight steals.

Plymouth State recorded its first post-season victory since winning the ECAC Championship back in 2003. The Gulls finish their season at 19-8 and continue the chase for their first postseason championship.
