KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The nine-time Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) champion Endicott softball team opened their 2012 season at the Rebel Spring Games in Florida on Sunday and claimed a 5-3, five-inning victory over Mount St. Joseph as heavy rains forced a halt in play.  Endicott’s second game to be played against Montclair State was cancelled due to poor weather conditions.

Game One: Endicott 5, Mount St. Joseph 3 (5 inn.)

Aggressive base running and eight strikeouts on the mount by junior pitcher Kayla Carignan (Laconia, N.H.) were critical in Endicott’s 5-3 win over Mount St. Joseph.  Carignan set a career-high with eight punch outs while showing good control with just one walk.  All three runs charged to Carignan were earned, coming on six hits by Mount St. Joseph.

The Gulls showed their aggressive tactics right off the bat as leadoff hitter Jocelyn Russo (Middletown, Conn.) got hit by a pitch and swiped second base.  The next batter, sophomore Alexandra Moise (North Reading, Mass.) got to first on another offering by Lions freshman Taylor McElhinny that sailed too far inside to put runners on first and second with no outs.  After a pop out, two costly passed balls brought Russo and Moise home to put Endicott ahead 2-0.

In the fourth inning, the Gulls were able to put three more runs on the board with two of those coming off the bat of Russo who roped a double to score freshman Jess Linden (Stratford, Conn.) and junior captain Byrne Katz (Trumbull, Conn.).   Russo would later score after Jesse Bilafer (Concord, Mass.) singled and an error by the Mount St. Joseph catcher allowed her to reach home plate.

The Lions rallied for three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth on a two-RBI double to left center by Lindsay Griffith and single to right by Megan Erdman that plated Griffith.

The Gulls went ahead 7-3 in the top of the sixth, but as the rain continued to pour down on the field the officials on site were forced to call the game.  That action reverted the score back to what it was at the end of five innings and Endicott took the 5-3 victory.

Russo , Moise and Katz each recorded stolen bases in the game.

Endicott continues its spring break schedule tomorrow with games against Utica and Springfield at 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm, respectively.
