Semester-Long Internship Q&A with Men's Rugby Seniors

Men's rugby team huddles up.

BEVERLY, Mass. - The semester-long internship is one of the essential pieces of Endicott's experiential learning model which includes two 120-hour internships, a semester-long internship, and senior thesis. In essence, it gets undergraduate students career ready with a loaded resume geared towards whatever their postgraduate endeavors may be.

Four of the members of the Class of 2018 for the Gulls men's rugby program - while balancing strength and conditioning programming, captains practices, official team practice, and the start to their 2017-18 campaign - have all completed their semester-long internship. Two of these exceptional student-athletes - John Clavin (North Providence, R.I.) and Connor Moulton (Falmouth, Mass.) - gave us an insight into their experience working in their desired professions through our new question and answer series.

What inspired you to pursue an internship at this organization or what inspired you to go into the specific industry in which you are working?

The Four Seasons is known in the world of hospitality as the industry leader for luxury. The opportunity to serve high profile customers in an atmosphere catered to delivering lifelong personal memorable experiences would prove to be a rewarding role.

What were some of your most meaningful experiences on the job and what did you learn?

From the start of my internship every colleague that I've interacted with has made an effort to not just get to know my name but to get to know my story. The company mission of the Four Seasons is centered around the Golden Rule; treat others how you want to be treated. Within the hotel, this isn't just a nice saying posted on the wall but it is genuinely carried out with co-workers and customers. As an introduction, to the hotel, the Regional Vice President and General Manager had a two-hour long lunch with the team of six interns to discuss our career and life goals. We were stunned that the top manager at the hotel took a significant amount of time out of his day to speak to us.

How did your internship help clarify your postgraduate career pursuits?

My experience at the Four Seasons has opened doors within the company and the hospitality industry that I could not only see myself in but be excited to jump into after graduation. I came to Endicott with a goal, and now that internship has confirmed my passion for hospitality I am ready to build a career in the industry I have studied.

What advice would you give students that are either just starting the internship program at Endicott or students that will be going on semester-long internship?

Whatever you're doing, wherever you're doing it, and whoever you're doing it with, make sure it is meaningful to you so that you do it fervently and passionately at every moment.

Semester-Long Internship: GrooveBoston
Previous Internships:

What inspired you to pursue an internship at this organization or what inspired you to go into the specific industry in which you are working?

GrooveBoston's mission is to make people happy. I completely agree with their goals and love to see the reactions of the audience during an amazing show.

What were some of your most meaningful experiences on the job and what did you learn?

I learned incredible amounts of time management skills. Every day I have action items, a full calendar, and One-on-One Meetings to make sure communication within the company is flawless. I have brought this over to my personal life and find myself using my time more wisely.

How did your internship help clarify your postgraduate career pursuits?

For me, I understand that I don't love computer science as much as I once did. I have fallen in love with branding. Creating ultimate brand loyalty is a passion of mine and I hope to continue that goal either at GrooveBoston or another company

What advice would you give students that are either just starting the internship program at Endicott or students that will be going on semester-long internship?

Always push yourself out of your comfort zone. I chose to take an internship outside of my perspective major and now I want to continue on in this field. You never know what you love until you try it.
