BEVERLY, Mass. – Following the College’s philosophy to "learn by doing" through experiential learning, 365 of Endicott’s varsity and club student-athletes completed internships throughout the 2014-15 academic year.
Among the group of 365 student-athletes, 32 majors were represented in internship placements which included organizations such as, but not limited to, Northwestern Mutual, PUMA, 451 Marketing, the Boston Ballet School, Spaulding Rehabilitation Center, and the Southern Worcester County Educational Collaborative, among many others.
Endicott’s student-athletes also saw their internship experiences take place in 19 states total, including California, Florida, Illinois, and Texas, and also in Australia, Bahrain, Denmark, France, and South Africa.
HOW INTERNSHIPS FOSTER PERSONAL GROWTH
“I found that I learned a lot about French culture and cuisine, which made me look at a lot of things differently when I came back to America.” – Brendan McGuire (Crew), Internship: Tufts European Center in Talloires, France
“My duties with the New England Revolution are very interchangeable on a weekly and even a daily basis so I always need to think ahead and prepare for things that may happen. Due to this, it is important for me to understand the overview and flow of the work schedule. Even though I’m an intern, the New England Revolution treat me as a full-time worker so I like to take on that responsibility and experience detailed work.” – Shintaroh Itoh (Men’s Soccer), Internship: New England Revolution
“Boston Ballet is a non-profit organization. I have always known those words, but never quite understood them until interning there. There is so much work that goes on behind the scenes of a non-profit organization that no one really sees or hears about unless they experience it first-hand. Throughout my internship I learned about the different levels of funding the organization receives through trustees and donors of the school. The organization has various marketing techniques that are executed throughout the month targeting younger kids as well as college students. Boston Ballet School has so many levels of direction that a person does not see from simply attending one of their ballets. It was one of the best experiences I’ve had to be on the inside of such a large organization and to see how all the different levels of staff and students work together to put on amazing productions like Swan Lake and The Nutcracker.” – Rhiannon Pearson (Dance), Internship: Boston Ballet School
“Being so hands on with projects and being able to use my knowledge from classes and past internships made this internship my favorite. I really felt like I was contributing to the company and the projects that I worked on were fun and exciting. I learned how to better time manage, and to be organized with tasks that I was responsible for. The biggest take away from this position was it is not always important how quickly I got something done, but rather the quality to which it was completed.” – Katie Donnelly (Women’s Soccer), Internship: PUMA
“I learned how to prioritize tasks and time management skills. This was challenging at first because I was balancing my internship, being a captain on the men’s tennis team and also staying on top of my thesis. My internship taught me the ins-and-outs of the PR (public relations) and digital marketing industry. The intern project allowed me to develop client services skills, which I found valuable in my professional career.” – Justin Warshavsky (Men’s Tennis), Internship: 451 Marketing (currently works at an advertising agency called CDHM)
HOW INTERNSHIPS LEAD TO CAREER OUTCOMES
“During my experience at Northwestern Mutual, I've had the opportunity of developing my own client base and working with these clients to help them with their finances. I've also had the opportunity of working with senior advisors, which has given me insight on how to handle different a variety of cases. “My internship with Northwestern Mutual will be my semester long internship as well, and the opportunity to work there full time after school is already there; it is just up to me. It has been a great experience and has led to a potential job for me.” – Max Motroni (Men’s Basketball), Internship: Northwestern Mutual
“I believe that my internship could lead to a potential job in my major in the future. I was able to boost my portfolio while working with Soldier due to the amount I learned about branding and design. “I actually have an interview lined up with Cell Signaling Technology and the potential to line up a job for post-graduation with them as well. I think the internship experience is what you make of it. HOW INTERNSHIPS HELP GAIN FIELD EXPERIENCE
“At Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital I was able to apply knowledge that I had previously learned in classes at Endicott. My class on Exercise For Special Populations allowed me to have an introduction to the adaptations I would later need to become comfortable with at my internship at Spaulding. Spaulding gave opportunities for people with physical and cognitive disabilities, to participate in sport, who may have thought they would never be able to. This internship taught me to think quickly and learn that not everything can be planned out ahead of time. I am grateful that I was given the opportunity to help others accomplish things that they did not think were possible.” – Kristen Thor (Women’s Lacrosse), Internship: Spaulding Rehabilitation Center
THE ENDICOTT MODEL
Endicott College is a pioneer in requiring comprehensive internship experiences in every program of study for undergraduate students. A philosophy of "learning by doing" permeates the college curriculum in which students are encouraged to integrate theory and practice in all of their studies.
Through their experiences in internships students will be prepared to:
- Apply, integrate, and evaluate knowledge within a particular academic discipline
- Develop competencies for careers and community service
- Explore career options and gain field experience
- Foster personal growth through increased self-confidence, interpersonal skills, an understanding of self and others, and a heightened awareness of ethical standards
- Improve the ability to learn in a self-directed manner
THE INTERNSHIP SEQUENCE FOR FIELD-BASED LEARNING AT ENDICOTT
Bachelor degree candidates complete two 120-hour Internships (INT100 and INT200) for two credits each and one Semester Internship for 12 credits over 14 weeks. Bachelor degree students entering Endicott College with 30 or more credits are exempt from one 120-hour internship.
OTHER MODELS FOR INTERNSHIP
Nursing, Athletic Training and Education students follow a different model for internships to meet their graduation requirements. Nursing and Athletic Training internship credits are earned in clinical education experiences. Education students devote internship hours to student teaching.
