Gulls Hold Off Colby, 78-76

WATERVILLE, Maine - Endicott College used a 9-1 run to break away from a tie game and then held on for a 78-76 victory over Colby College in non-conference men's basketball Saturday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

With the game tied 64-64 with 8:19 remaining, Endicott (3-6) used that 9-1 run over the next four minutes to pull away for good. Joey Burgos (Lawrence, Mass.) had a 3-point play and Graham Whitelaw (Kennebunk, Maine) nailed a 3-point shot during the run.

Colby (7-4) had a chance to tie the game in the final minute. The Mules trailed 76-67 with 3:15 remaining, but used a 6-0 run to get the margin to 76-73 in the final minute. Colby, however, turned the ball over with 16 seconds left and Endicott's Todd Burton (Lynn, Mass.) sealed the win with a lay-up with 12 seconds remaining. Colby managed a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the final points.

Whitelaw, Gary Corbett (Danbury, Conn.), and Burton all had 14 points for the Gulls. Ross Stewart (Palm Harbor, Fla.) added 12 points, while Burgos finished with nine points. Burton also had five assists for the winners.

Adam Choice (Newport, R.I.) had 19 of his game-high 30 points in the opening half and added 13 rebounds, five assists, and four steals for Colby. Justin Sherman (Piedmont, Calif.) added 12 points, while Mark Gaudet (Bingham, Maine) and Gil Haylon (Wellesley, Mass.) both had eight points.
