In a rematch of the 2008 ECAC Championship, the Plymouth State University Panthers exacted some revenge with a 4-2 win over Endicott College on Saturday afternoon in Beverly, Mass. The Gulls (0-1) were outshot by the Panthers (1-0) at a 31-7 clip in the game while Plymouth State also held the edge in corners, 17-3. Four different Panther players scored a goal including Sarah Smith (Lexington, Mass.) who tallied a goal and had one assist.
Plymouth State came right out of the gates looking to dominate on the offensive half as the Panthers took an early 1-0 lead on a Kerry D’Ambroise (Lowell, Mass.) goal off a pass from Betsy Renauld (Penacook, N.H.). The Gulls responded nearly eight minutes later when \#Lauren Atkinson\# (Southbury, Conn.) took the ball all the way from midfield and tied the game up 1-1 with a shot past Plymouth’s Elyse Sedgley (Hopkinton, N.H.).
In the second half, Endicott’s lone senior \#Megan McBride\# (Saugus, Mass.) raced out in front of the defense on a fast break chance while \#Joanne Reid\# (Clarksville, Md.) fed her a pass that McBride deposited into the right part of the net for the Gulls first lead of the contest. Unfortunately for Endicott, the lead would be short-lived as Plymouth’s Lauren Bergeron (New Hampton, N.H.) made a nifty move in the circle on a corner and tied the game with her first goal of the season.
The game seemed destined for an extra frame until Kristina Conroy (Wakefield, Mass.) put the Panthers ahead for good on a cross inside the circle from Sarah Smith with less than eight minutes to play. Smith would score five minutes later for an insurance goal as the Panthers avenged a 1-0 loss from a year ago in the 2008 ECAC Championship.
The Panthers’ Elyse Sedgley picked up her first win of the season by making three saves on seven shots faced. Endicott’s \#Taylor Teixeira\# (Exeter, N.H.) suffered the setback in her collegiate debut, however was impressive making 14 saves on 31 shots.
The Gulls return to action on Wednesday when they host UMaine-Farmington at 4:00 p.m. Plymouth State returns to Plymouth, N.H. for their home opener on Wednesday against Castleton State at 4:00 p.m.
