Women’s Tennis Edges Bridgewater State 5-4

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Endicott women's tennis team traveled to non-conference opponent Bridgewater State on Thursday night for their third and final spring season matchup before the NCAA Tournament. Sophomore Suzie Newman (Dighton, Mass.) tallied the game deciding match as the Gulls edged the Bears 5-4. Endicott improves to 14-3, while going 3-0 this spring. Bridgewater State drops their first match of the 2013-14 season at 16-1.

In doubles play the Blue and Green posted the first win on the afternoon as junior Amy Heacox (Marion, Mass. and freshman Mackenzie Rhodes (Rye, N.H.) defeated their opponent 8-3 in the #1 slot. (#2) Newman and partner Brittany Potter (Bedford, N.H.) fell in a tough 8-5 decision to senior Jackie McGuirk (Raynham, Mass.) and junior Melissa Flynn (Stoneham, Mass.). To wrap up doubles freshmans Skyelar MacLeod (Portsmouth, R.I.) and Jamie Zompa (Marlborough, Mass.) dropped a close 8-6 decision to sophomore Alison Vautrin (Somerset, Mass.) and junior Rachael Eramo (Rowley, Mass.).

To start off singles play MacLeod got the Gulls back in the game with her 6-1, 6-1 victory in the #6 slot. (#1) Heacox followed suit (6-4, 6-2) along with sophomore (#5) Savannah Deady (Andover, Mass.) (6-4, 2-6, 6-1) to give the Blue and Green a 4-2 lead. The Bears fought back defeating Rhodes (5-7, 6-7) and Potter (5-7, 2-6). In the final pairing of the day with the match on the line (#3) Newman defeated her opponent 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to give the Blue and Green a 5-4 victory.

Endicott will see action next in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
