Endicott battles NEWMAC rival Wellesley to 9-0 loss

WELLESLEY, Mass. - A day after winning their season opener over Colby-Sawyer, the Endicott women's tennis team suffered their first loss of the 2013-14 as the Gulls dropped a non-conference match to NEWMAC rival Wellesley 9-0 on Saturday afternoon. 

The Gulls (1-1) fought hard in each of their matches with three of them using tiebreakers to help decide the winner.  Endicott will be on the road for their next match, a showdown with GNAC opponent Emerson on Tuesday, September 2nd at 4:00 pm at the Victory Field Courts in Watertown.  

Today's match was the season and home opener for Wellesley (1-0) who is coming off an appearance in the NEWMAC Championship in the 2012 season.  The Blue travels to Smith for their conference opener next Saturday.

Sophomore Suzie Newman (Dighton, Mass.) and freshman Jamie Zompa (Marlborough, Mass.) gave Wellesley their toughest battle in #3 doubles, dropping a tightly contested match 9-8 (7-5 tiebreaker).  Wellesley took all three doubles matches including an 8-2 win at #1 and an 8-4 win at #2 doubles.

In singles action, junior captain Chrissy Martel (Westbrook, Conn.) fell 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 at the #2 position while sophomore Sarah Hill (Topsham, Maine) also lost a first set tiebreaker at #6 singles 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.  Junior Amy Heacox (Marion, Mass.), thrust into the #1 singles flight for the first time in her career, suffered her first loss in singles play since May 11th, 2012 as she lost in straight sets 6-2, 6-0.
