CCC Athletes of the Week

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Endicott freshman face-off specialist Tommy Hughes (Coram, N.Y.) won his second Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Rookie of the Week award this season in a 1-1 week in which the Gulls lost to #9 Tufts before taking down conference opponent Salve Regina to maintain atop the CCC standings.

Hughes won 56.1% of his face-off attempts including a 19-of-24 effort against Salve Regina on Saturday. Hughes collected 21 ground balls in two games, 14 of which came against the Seahawks, and contributed offensively with his second goal of the season. The goal came just six seconds after a Jeremy Morgan (Lake Panamoka, N.Y.) tally made it a 2-0 game early in the first quarter.

Through 13 games, Hughes has won 197-of-313 (.629) face-offs and scooped 134 ground balls, just over 10 per game. He ranks eighth in NCAA Division III in ground balls per game and 24th in face-off winning percentage.

Hughes and the Gulls are back in action on Tuesday night, April 15th at home against CCC rival Western New England starting at 7:00 pm in the Stadium. This is a rematch of the 2013 CCC Championship and a game that will likely determine the top seed in the upcoming CCC Tournament starting on April 26th
